Afternoon All,

Wonder if any of you have experienced the following and could give me any advice.

2 months ago my C200 (2.0 petrol, Auto) started cutting out almost exactly at the same spot on the way home from work and wouldn't re-start if I went on a short journey. It would crank over fine but wouldn't re-start for about 5-10 minutes until I'm guessing it had cooled down.

Straight away I looked on this forum for common faults like this and deduced it was a crank position sensor. Bought one of these and it didn't work. Then I noticed I couldn't hear the fuel pump priming. The next day it conked out so I jumped out and flicked the fuel pump relay thinking it might be sticky. Car started straight away so I went down my local MB garage and purchased a new relay. The car has been fine for almost 2 months then as soon as I pick up my MOT certificate after shelling out a couple of hundred quid to get it through the test it wouldn't start again.

Got it re-started and drove back to work. On my way home from work it cut out 30 yards from where I had broke down before (this is about 5 miles from my work ). Took out the relay flicked, banged and prodded it but the car didn't start for 2 hours. Brought a new relay the next day thinking the old one had gone faulty but it's still cutting out.

The big question, do you guys know what this could be? Is it the Sender/pump unit? Cheapest I can see one of these for is £130 and I don't want to change it if its not that as they don't offer refunds on this part.

Any wisdom shed on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

When was your fuel filter last changed? if clogged it can lead to premature failure of the relay and fuel pump, sometimes the pump will recover after a cooldown period.

P.S. Filter is 26 or 27 in Malcolm's diagram above

Thanks for your replies. I run it up to temperature again last night and it cut out again. I bypassed the feed to the pump and it started whirring away and hissing where there was too much pressure in pipes so I know the pump is good.

Car didn't start again for about an hour and a half. I'm going to check the resistance on the coil pack and make sure that isn't breaking down when it gets hot. I am even thinking that it may now be a CPS now. Will check the coil and if that's ok I may buy another CPS. Any ideas on the cheapest place to buy one?
