C204 2014 C220 cdi engine management software update

Hi All, I have just had a recall notice about an airbag fault, I have booked the car in at MB and they told me that there is also an engine management software update due, My worry is that if they do this it will ruin the performance and economy, i think it is related to the emissions issue that was in the news relating to MB diesel cars a couple of years ago. Has anyone had this done and noticed any difference?

I guess one hopes that it isn’t something that might also wear down the engine quicker and thus make you upgrade sooner than you were originally planning?!!
