    Hi all,
I’m hoping some of you can help.

Yesterday while driving to work my engine just turned off while driving through a local village. There’s no other way to describe it. The car was running smooth as always, at first I didn’t know what had happened as I just coasted to a stop. The fault is obviously electrical as there were no mechanical rumblings or jerky-ness. There were no warning indications on the dash or anything pointing towards a fault.

I tried switching off and on again. No good. The locking system is fully functional, the steering lock is releasing, the battery is very strong however when I turn the key the car goes through the normal starting procedures but does not call the starter. Monitoring the battery voltage and there is no dip or ‘pull’ of power. I tried disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes and tried again but to no avail.

The car is at my mechanics now but I haven’t heard anything from him. The recovery guy mentioned an eis module. Is this likely to be the culprit?

My car is a 2010 model with just under 80k miles and does not have start/stop function.

    Any pointers much appreciated.

    Hi,

There are low chances to be the ignition switch . I presume the car is automatic? i am thinking at the starter motor. EIS looks good to me.

    Hi,

    Yes the car is auto.

I don’t believe it’s the starter due to the engine switching off at 30mph.

I would think there is a good chance the car will have logged a fault code for an MB specific code reader or MB Star diagnostic machine .
Good luck with the repair though buddy

    Probably a fueling issue.

    MB Star session time.

I miss this detail. Indeed it cannot be the starter. It could be something related to the ecu or maybe cranckshaft sensor. But a diagnostic would tell. Ignition switch dont fail while driving..n

I’ve thought of that as well. Nothing else seems logical to me as the starter would crank if it was a sensor fault surely?. I’ll give my mechanic a chance to get warmed up this morning and give him a call. I’ve no doubt a good quality diagnostics machine will bring something up.

I don’t believe so as there was no sign of a fueling fault. I would expect juddering prior to stopping and the car to crank the starter motor in this situation of which neither have happened or are happening.

Correct I just re-read your first post properly.

DAS controls fuel injection and cranking.

Car cut out after DAS enabled.

No crank/start check DAS protocols with an MB Star session and competent operator.

Does the spare key work ?

Hi, the spare key does the same as the normal key. I tried this at the mechanics. Still no word from him, he promised to look at it today. DAS seems a likely culprit then. I’ll look into it, thanks.

Ok it looks like DAS and EIS are similar. My mechanic has come across the ignition fault before but never heard of it failing while enabled. You are correct the car cut out after DAS was enabled.

Contact me tomorrow over the phone to hear the problem better and if you are close to the car it would be even better,. a diagnostic machine and phone connection and you will have your car started :)

    Best regards

Hi, that’s a very kind offer which I’ll take up possibly tomorrow as I’m away from home for a couple of days.

My mechanic says that his code reader is displayed approx 50 different random faults all saying ‘fault to earth’. He’s going to get a look tomorrow. He doesn’t quite know yet but is going to check all earth straps first of all.

Thinking about it, unless it’s a complete earth disconnection which is unlikely as this was a sudden fault occurrence with no signs of restarting, it’s likely something has failed properly.

I think i know what this is...as I have had it before on exactly the same car.

Check the front SAM fuse box for the fuse for the starter motor or engine electronics.

If it has blown check the resistance of the inlet port shut off motor on the inlet manifold.

MB have changed where the power for the IPS motor comes from on the OM642 update engine, it feeds from this fuse. Previously it was fused with the turbo charger. However if the motor causes a high resistance or current draw it will blow this fuse and the engine will cut dead and won't restart.

Doesn't that stop communication with the CDi electronics if its blown ?

I can't remember exactly which fuse blows, it was about 18 months ago or more I had this issue. But i do remember looking at the wiring diagram and chased the fault to the IPS, which after replacement, cured the problem.

Hi, thanks for the help. I’ve passed this onto my mechanic. I think this is going to take some time, he is working through the systems to eliminate the possible causes of the faults.

He has put an earth strap direct from the battery negative to the engine but this hasn’t eliminated any of the fault codes. So I’m confident it’s not actually an earth strap fault. At this stage myself and mechanic are in agreement that one or more main control modules have failed. It’s just trying to figure out which one.

When this happened, were you on a bending road, to the right or left?
