C220 Bluetec 2014 AMG LINE
Hi everyone.
I have an opportunity to buy a soon to be ex lease, late 2014 C220 Bluetec Manual AMG Line saloon. 70k miles. Although the mileage is pretty high, I know the owner and the car has been carefully driven on mostly A road and motorway, well looked after both inside and out.
I realise that any modern diesel will likely need money spent on it as mileage heads past 100k and the buy price reflects that. I also realise that parts and servicing reflect the premium nature of the car. I am guessing the DPF will need emptying of ash at some point and clutch Dmf will need replacing at some point. My Mileage is around 17-20k per year
I see my choice as being
  • spend less money on a car with a known provenance and faultless reliability or
  • spend considerably more and buy slightly newer/30k mileage (with auto box) from a franchised dealer with the added protection that entails but no idea whether the component parts have been thrashed and abused.
I am not scared of running a high mileage car. Ran a petrol Mondeo and petrol 9-3 both for 200k miles before they expired. Just wanted to see if there is anyone on the forum who can advise how solid the W205 model is for higher mileage use and what gremlins might be lurking past 90/100k miles.
Also whether anyone has experienced any issues after the recent emissions fix. I believe this would have been carried out at the most recent service. Seeing what the VAG updates did to higher mileage diesels it makes me slightly nervous.
Thanks!

I don’t think the mileage is very high and shouldn’t put you off - DPF stuff shouldn’t be an issue conversely as the miles are high ish
I’d be more bothered on the manual gearbox, not mechanically as such ( although Merc manuals aren’t the best possibly), just that you might struggle to move it on not being automatic which most potential Mercedes owners look for
So: my conclusion if it were me I’d wait and pay maybe more for an auto
Also given the miles you’re going to cover it will be less stressful
(Nothing against manuals in the right circumstances)

Thanks. V helpful. I usually buy used 18 months old and use move them onto scrapyard rather than sell privately. I am breaking routine with this one as my petrol Focus “only” has 85 k on it but after two excellent Fords I fancy something a bit more special. Only ever owned cars with manual boxes in the last 35 years. Auto box would be nice but not deal breaker unless the C220+ manual box is a horrid experience. Test driving next week

I think you will find the manual box a required taste, my son looked at a C320 manual a short while ago and said he, 'now understands why I said the modern Mercedes manuals were, well lets say yukkie' :D

Make sure the price you pay reflects the manual gearbox, as said manual mercs are not universally desirable so dont pay anywhere near an auto car price.

Thanks Andy. Good point, I have been working my way through used prices and will be trying to reach a suitable figure based on it being a manual

Nothing wrong with a 220 with the manual box my bother has a C220 manual estate (S205) since 2016 does around 45k a year with out an issue, as long as its serviced regularly there should be no reason it won't last a long time.
As everyone as suggested, do reasearch on similare age/mileage cars and make sure the price is reflected and you should be fine

Two of my three MBs have double that mileage and one is my daily runner. I wouldn't call 70k miles high.
Every MB I've had over the years has been sold at higher mileages than that and have all been fine.

Thanks, that is very helpful and thanks everyone for your contributions. Not having owned a MB or a diesel before, I am trying to do my homework.

I have not seen much in the way of complaints about DPF's EGR or AdBlue heater issues on W205/S205's but there are only a limited number of 2014/2015 cars at the end of a 3 year lease with that sort of high mileage that have come onto the used market so much harder to see if there is a pattern

The other big question I had was whether anyone has any experience of the late 2017 emissions software recall/update and whether this has caused any issues? The VW issues are well known, especially the impact on EGRs for higher mileage cars with so would be interested in whether the MB fix has caused any issues for anyone or indeed for W204 or other models if they have had the fix applied

Check out the auctions Mannheim and BVA, all the end of term lease ones come through these, you can register and get honest listings of every car. Cut out the middle man potentially
