c220 cdi bad starting ????

Having only recntly purchased. 2000 220 cdi auto( old shape) on Sunday!!
After a good drive out,i stopped ( with the family,wife not to happy about me buying the car) for a meal. the car had been left 1 1/2.started it up,but in the time it took me to put the seatbelt on,it cut out!!!! i tryed to restart it but no joy.the engine just turns over.after 4mins trying still no joy.wifes saying i told you not to buy(if looks could kill).before i rang the RAC. i tried it again,cracking & cracking then it burst into life and got us home.Please any ideas on what could be wrong with it.I cannot fault the car and its a absolute pleasure to drive(my wife thinks different):sad:

Hi, I have exactly the same engine model and year. It has always started first time. The only odd thing is that the glow plug indicator light never comes on. Does your indicator ligt come on ? More mportantly, does it go out ? If not it could be a problem with the plugs. The other thing which comes to mind is if the fuel system is not priming / pressurising properly. Had you recently run out of fuel and then filled up again ? Of course, there could be many other causes due the ignition etc which are best diagnosed using test equipment

The glow plug lights up and go off, and the engine was warm so i think there fine.i had a full tank of Diesel at the time

Hello,

It could be that is is drawing in a little bit of air into the fuel lines once you switch off for a while. If it's a cdi , if my memory serves me right you could check for this by taking the silver cover off on the right hand side of engine (as you look from the front of car) then the fuel lines are visable and they are clear plastic so you can see if there's any air in lines. They do suffer from the o- ring on the fuel lines going hard. I'm pretty sure that this applies to your age of car but havn't worked on an early cdi for a while so Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Also check for water in the Fuel Filter... It's not the glow plugs since your engine was still warm. A good test is to see if you can start it (when at home) without the use of the glow plugs. It's almost Summer and if the engine has enough compression it should start... When I was living in the Algarve I never used the glow plugs but he it's warm there...

i hate to butt into a thread like this, however i was wondering where can i go to find motor coding for the mercedes engines. i just landed a job as a service technician at a local dealership (start next monday) and i want to familiarize myself with these vechicles. thanks and my appoligies for inturupting.
