Firstly hello to everyone.

I am thinking of buying a C220 CDi coupe, looking to pay in the region of 6k (ish). This will be my first MB. I have a few questions.

1. Whats the general opinion of these, especially the diesel.
2. Anything to look out for when buying.
3. What are the servicing costs like.

Any other comments.

thanks
Paul.

*UPDATE*

I went for a test drive in a C200 cdi coupe 2004 from a mercedes dealership last week.

1. They offer an extra two year warrenty for £900, on top of the one year for approved used cars. I thought this was a great offer for three years piece of mind.
2. What sort of economy do you get from the C200 and C220 diesels.
3. Auto or manual?

Anything else to consider.

1. You can use and independent dealer, they will probably be cheaper.
2. Around 40-45 mpg can be acheived maybe 50+ mpg when driven economically.
3. Auto everytime they are so smooth and re sale will be easier. Merc manuals are frankly poor compared to rivals.

Hope this helps. :)

I actually thought £900 was good value, however it may mean you are tied to main dealer servicing.

On an approved used car, pay an extra £900 and you end up with three years warranty. My BMW when i let it expire was £700 for one year on a 316.

regarding 3 id take the manual every time. the manual boxes are fine once your used to them. unlike most on here who say otherwise as they tried one once for 2 miles and didnt get along with it. it takes a month or 2 to get the feel of properly, then theyre great. ive had 2, wish current was manual too!

On an A, B, Or C class .......... the box, wether auto or manual, should be your own choice ............ a manual is not worth a lot less on a 6K car, if at all ......... and the manual box is fine ............. our previous C class, was manual, and I have an Auto now .......... only cos it was free !

It does mean that, servicing at an independent is usually around a 1/3 cheaper then a main dealer.

I don't think you can pro-rate the costs of any two providers quite that easily.

The labour "cost per hour" rate will vary in fixed proportion, but the general make up of the service and accompanying work can vary radically.

Items such as changing part worn brake pads "just in case" compared to letting them run to the next service (or until the warning light shows) can make a big difference, as will changing brake fluid every 2 years compared with less frequent BF changes.

The true difference between the most and least expensive can therefore be much greater - and that is without prejudice to the serviceability of the car.

We who use Indies and don't buy warranties have therefore spent much less, so can afford problems if they happen and can be secretly smug if they do not!

My comment was basically about the "good value" of a 3 yr warrenty for £900.
Secondly, i thought the idea you had to tie the warranty to main delaer servicing was against fair trade. As long as you use genuine parts you can use an indy.

I did just over 100k on an 03 C200 CDi estate with autobox and averaged 44-48mpg with mixed driving. On a run I coulds often see high forties and into the 50's (just!)

Re the warrenty, and without teaching you to suck eggs, check what it covers. Make sure that there is no mileage limit if you are going to use it for above average mileage annually.

£900 for an extra 2 years peace of mind probably is good value, but the point you make about fair trade, I believe only applies to new cars with the MB warranty.

The approved used warranty for my car is underwritten by one of several insurance companies and while the benefits of the tier 1 warranty are equal to that of the original MB warranty, the T&Cs state "the vehicle must be serviced at recommended intervals by an MB approved service centre" (Main Dealer), so this must be taken into account when considering the total cost.

I was fortunate to include a 2 year free parts and labour service contract into my deal which was on offer when I bought the car.

I think i'll have to go highrer than 6k, more like 12k.
Is SAT NAV a worthwhile option. Its nice the way it sits in the centre console.

*UPDATE*

As asked. I understand the Mercedes sat nav is called Command. Is it worth having. Secondly as i want leather as well, i realise i am limiting my options. Is the sat nav an easy or cheap retro-fit.

COMAND is expensive as an extra when ordered new, and so expensive as to be unattractive IMHO as a retro-fit. Other navigation systems are much cheaper and can be moved from car to car. COMAND does however have the possibilities of integrated hands free phone, radio and CD player.

COMAND certainly looks the part and is "made to measure" - it may be more difficult to steal, but it is not impossible and most motor insurance policies would not cover the full cost under their ICE provisions.

Having said that, it is accepted fact that many people will specify new vehicles with COMAND & leather. It enables them to enjoy these things and makes the car much more sale-able in the after market.

So finding a car with both these extras need not be that difficult.

Is it actually any good. Is there any subscription fee. As you say it certainly looks the part.

I find it generally fine. Like any satnav, it is not perfect and you do best to have a general idea of where you are going, and the commonsense to ignore it if you think it is telling you to do something silly.

It will not take a full post code, so you need a street name for programming. If stuck, I google the post code of the destination and get the street name off Streetmap.co.uk, which also helps me understand the topography.

Then it's fine.

No annual fee, but periodical updates (software and firmware). Alfie @ comandonline (http://www.comandonline.co.uk/home.php?cat=252 ) is a member here and can advise better.
