My 51 plate C220 has been laid up for about 15 months and the engine wasn't run for about the last seven. I had to get it MOT'd and they said they couldn't get the Turbo to work more than intermittantly, but long enough to pass the test?? Anyway, it appears that when I first start-up the Turbo works OK but quickly gets to the point where the acceleration becomes very flat and the max revs are 3000. The garage says it could be the turbo actuator that's sticky after sitting for so long, but I'm concerned that something more dire is wrong.

The car seems to drive very smoothly and mpg is still good, just no oomph. Any ideas?

Theres a boost sensor but i suspect the wastegate is sticking!! thats the more common fault!

Not cheap, you need to make sure that, that is the fault before you buy one,

I belive there around the £700 mark!

If the flaps are stuck,,and this has only happened as it has been standing,,there must be some way of freeing them up

If it has been stood something will be stuck, not broken. Do not panic - I bet good money that it will be something simple and stupid, and I would be amazed if a new torbo was needed (unless it was shot before it was laid up). As far as I know (and I could be wrong) turbos work all of the time - and the control systems are there to stop it working not make it go - in your case a wastgate. Either that is sticking or the actuating solenoids are sticking. Have you let it idle for a long time and let it get lovely and warm, raising the revs gently every so often to encourage a little movement in the bits and bobs?

Alternatively (and no real help I know) you could take the view that only two items are required in a toolkit. Duck tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duck tape. If it doesn't move and it should - WD40.

Further Possibility

Just been looking at another thread for a different model with same rev problems.... a suggestion was is the air filter needing replacement as this will put that model into safe mode. Does the same happen on the 220?

This was a common fault with the 203 and 211 when they first come out, changed more of these things than i care to remember!!

You could unplug the MAF and try the car

Thanks I'll try that BUT........

I'm ignorant of the underneath of a Merc so

a) What is a MAF?
b) Where will I see it?
c) Where's the plug?

Ta:Oops:

Unfortunately it would appear the air filter is OK.... still tops out at 3000 revs. Funny thing is though everything works fine when the engines cool.... seeems odd.

Lerpy,

There is a merc indie up at Headley Pro-Tech Garage Services Tel: 01635 299811| Units 1-2, Orchard Business Park, Newbury Rd, Kingsclere, Newbury, Berkshire RG20 4SY

Failing that a run down to MBS would take less than 45 mins.

Would get this nailed once and for all...

Anyway, it appears that when I first start-up the Turbo works OK but quickly gets to the point where the acceleration becomes very flat and the max revs are 3000.

Since the turbo works intermittently, - i suspect you may have a low vacuum boost pressure. This will show up on star or other obd2 readers.

Get the codes read otherwise it's guesswork. ;)

Took my motor to the Merc dealer and they think that as the Turbo works when the engine temp is below 50 degrees C then there guess, (that's cos I wouldn't pay for a test yet) that it'll be the MAF and not the turbo itself. Any comments anyone??

hi lerpy. sounds like it is going into a default rpm and power limiting mode (emergency program). there are many many possible causes - really you need fault codes reading as a starting point.
