C220 Cdi Help!!!!

Well what a great site!

I have had a good look around but am still stuck. The other day im driving my 52 reg C220 and all of a sudden it sounds like my exhaust has fallen off and is dragging along the floor. After stopping the exhaust is fine but when I accelerate there is a 'growling noise' coming from the engine. The car is an automtaic and is changing gear ok, there also appears to be a slight smell from inside the engine? Doesnt sound good, so am not driving it at the mo and having to wait a while for it to be looked at.....any ideas, anything obvious i have missed, in case it helps the mileage is 92k on a diesel engine

Could possibly be your Catalysts. There are two from memory, a pre-catalyst just after the Turbo (look in engine bonnet, left hand side, you will need to remove air filter to see it) and the actual multi-way catalyst which is just about under where you sit in the car. Get someone to rev the car and listen to where the sound is actually coming from. Catalysts break up and then knock around inside the exhaust system and can also limit performance or throw the car into emergency mode.

Thanks very much for the advice, so far it doesnt seem to make much noise when stationary mainly only when accelerting (growl cuts in and then stops then starts etc). Sounds strange but you can almost 'feel' it through the acceleration pedal. This could be the 'dragging metal sound' i heard then as it broke up. Oh well at least i got a nice rainy weekend for it!!!!! thanks again for the help
