Hi all club members, a few days ago i picked up a C220 CDI MANUAL 2003 MODEL from a insurance dealer, the car was stolen and recovered in april/may 2008 and i bought it this month, it has no major body damages.

The problem is that it doesn't start, all electrics such as radio, alarms, lighting and all the rest is working fine, when i place the key in position 2 it shows up all lights and says no malfunctions and it makes a high fan noise, but when i start it there is no response, no cranking, clicking or anything, the display does not even response, as if i am not even starting it, i thought it may have one of the following problems:

:( BATTERY : But bought a new one still no response
:( IMMOBILIZER HAS ACTIVATED: But key turns and everything else works
:( WRONG KEY : Again everything else works

or the ones below, which i think may be the problem

 NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH
 CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH
 IGNITION SWITCH
 STARTER MOTOR

can anyone please give suggestions, what it might be so that i can get the car started

thanks faisal

Hi & Welcome,

There are 3 parts to most of the keys, the RF bit for locking & unlocking at distance the IR bit for opening & closing the windows at short range and activating the EIS (ignition switch) & the passive immobiliser bit for disarming the immobiliser. From your description it sounds as if the RF & IR parts are working but the chip for the immobiliser isn't.
How many keys do you have?

The key's aren't cheap (~£160) and the immobiliser is very good (generally you cannot drive away a modern Mercedes without the key) which considering your car was stolen recovered makes me wonder what damage was done to it. Getting an auto electrician to take a look or a Mercedes Independent specialist may be the best option.
There are a few Mercedes specialists on here so they maybe able to offer further advice.

if the fans are running at full speed then the engine ECU is not being connected on the can-bus, drivers side fuse box, in there closest to the wing is the ecu, just out side on the turret is the earth for it, thats where the fault is, earth or wiring or ecu!

Hi Thanks colechelle the problem was there, as i got someone to have a look at it and they said the relay wasnt connected, now it has finally started, now while the car is running it won't pickup power and is also making banging noises and releasing alot of white fumes from the exhaust, ive also done a diagnostic check done by a mechanic, he says it needs a air flow meter (reason for it to lack power) and 4 glow plugs and i thought there was something wrong with the fuel injectors as it is making that noise and fumes but never came up on the diagnostic, any suggestions please help

change the air mass sensor and you might find thats the problem, air mass can give you many strange faults, i would start there and see what diff that makes, glad to be of some help!

just reread your last post, fumes could be coming from the injector seals, that would give you a popping noise and the smell, easy to replace the seals, must use new bolts when refitting!
