c220 cdi tapping help!

i have a 2003 c220cdi 100k . its developed a constant tapping noise coming from engine. took it along to local mb. young college grad looked at it said it was an injector.. i was surprised as my mate whos a mechanic suggested it was hydraulic lifter. anyway left car with mb, they called back told me it wasn't injecter and noise was coming from engine LOL....
but for them to diagnose problem it would cost a lot of money, however it may be hydraulic tappets? so i went along to collect car paid them for 3 hours labour £240+ and still don't know what the problem is?
My mechanic friend is pretty sure its a lifter, does anyone now how much it should cost at mb for a lifter to be fixed/fitted. or any other advice re this would be appreciated.

What easy money for achieving nothing! Poor you. I wouldn't have the nerve to charge anyone if I achieved nothing for them. Would you?

I have just replaced the hydraulic lifters on my W203 C220 CDI myself and was a fairly easy task, and i'm not a mechanic. I did however ask Merc to print off the workshop guide whilst I was present being charged for the time visiting the garage!!....
No special tools were required other than a torque wrench for 10Nm for the cam bearing caps.............
Would have thought a reputable garage would charge 2-3hrs for the task.............
