Merc parking brakes are notoriously poor, often needing loads of left foot force to keep the vehicle stopped.
So much so that on a lake slipway I pulled the cable out of the adjuster on a Vito with a bang, so then relied on the parking pawl (I put it in park).
Hi there, i wonder if someone can help please.
I have a merc c220 cdi w204, yesterday i applied the parking brake (foot pedal) i pressed it down as normal and then i heard a loudish bang and the pedal went slack, i cannot now apply the parking brake as it feels slack, and i have to pull it up with my feet to release it, any ideas of what has happened? i will be getting the car recovered to a garage tomorrow but wanted an idea of possible problems. Has anyone experienced this?

Hi there, perhaps not a question to put here but it is to do with the parking brake.

Today i pressed my foot on the parking brake (foot pedal) pressed it as normal heard the clicks and then the last click i heard a bang sounded like perhaps the cable snapped?? i can no longer hold the car with the parking brake as it doesn't feel secure when i now press the foot pedal you can hear the clicks but it feels ever so weak and goes all the way to the floor. I can sort of release it but have to pull the pedal back up with my foot. Any ideas of where to start looking / checking?

I am having it recovered to a garage tomorrow but would love it if someone has some ideas of what i should check for?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rakos84. I think you’ve possibly diagnosed your own problem and I’d guess at a snapped cable. Good luck with getting it sorted.

You might that the parking brake mechanism has flared to allow the nipple through,
snapped cable, 1 of 3 , might well be it.
Diagnosis required.
If the 204 is similar to the 203 start by lifting the rear seat and the cover below. That would give access to the parking brake adjuster mechanism.
