Hi Guys
I have a problem with my car (C220 CDi 1999 Estate), when I turn off the ignition after a journey there seems to be a fan comes on inside the body work, its on the drivers side in front of the wheel, I think it may have something to do with the Turbo as if its trying to get rid of excess heat. Is this normal?
The temp in the car is normal and I hav'nt noticed any loss in power.
any ideas?
Cheers
Ed

Hi Ed and welcome to the forum, are you sure that the noise is in the car, or could it be under the bonnet

That sounds to me like the ecu cooling fan, it continues running for about 10 minutes after engine shutdown.

Hi and thanks for the reply, Sorry Im not great on mechanics, I have now had a look at the unit , took the wheel off and the unit is in behind the front wheel arch cover its a small unit with a fat hose going to the Turbo and a couple of other smaller hoses couldn't see where the other hoses were going, also a metal hose pointing downward which seems to be an exhaust, hope this makes sum sense to you.
Cheers

Just re-read and noticed that the noise is from the drivers side so, yes, it probably is the electric coolant recirculating pump which runs for about 10 minutes after engine shutdown. The aforementioned ecu cooling fan is on the passenger side, this also continues running for 10 minutes.

I'm only guessing now but it sounds like it might be an auxilary heater that runs off diesel...the exhaust pipe you mentioned gives me that idea.......as i say, only guessing.

Yeah Pump's a good description for it, have you any idea why it seems to be struggling with the job its supposed to do?, I've had the car about six months and hadn't noticed any noises before

Electric coolant recirculating pumps are working continuously while the engine is running and they continue working for 10 minutes after engine shutdown, the brushes eventually wear down and the pump stops working without you being aware............sometimes, a sharp jolt such as driving over a bump will cause the worn out brushes to make contact with the commutator and the pump will work for a short time but probably in an erratic fashion.

Are you sure it's not the auxillary heater? They do sound a bit like a jet engine and continue to run after the engine is switched off.

They are situated at the front offside of the car (just forward of the wheel arch).

Try turning it off inside the car (on the centre console). The red light has to be on for it to be swithched off.

Sorry about the delay in posting, I havn't been driving the car for a few days but this suits the description, I will check this tonight hopefully this is what the noise is.
