C220 Coupe starting problems - fuel frolics

Greetings one and all,
I have a Mercedes C220 Diesel Coupe, 2002/3. The car had been running fine but, the other night, would not start.

Following the usual AA recovery farce, it is now resting at an independent garage with a fair amount of Mercedes experience.

They have determined that it is something to do with the fuel - whether that is the main fuel pump, fuel lines, lift pump, injectors or any other of the myriad fuel elements, has yet to be established. They are taking the car to a Bosche Auto Service centre today and I gather that these guys have quite comprehensive diagnostic equipment.

So, to my question... are there any "known" faults with the C220 diesel fuel system? Should I be expecting a monumental bill for a fuel pump or pumps?

Any help would be bonza.

Just had a thought........

Have a injector leak off test done to test the injectors. If they are ok....
get them to replace all the flexi fuel pies and fuel filter and this should sort it.

It was you who just phoned me?

It was indeed. :D

BTW, you mention the flexi fuel pipes, are these in the engine bay, or travelling from the tank?

Many thanks for the advice, I'll pass it on to my local garage and see if they have tried this.

Cheers,

Hugh

Sorry to say I can't help you there... I've been floundering around myself with the C220 refusing to start.

I cant say if this is any help to anyone else but here goes anyway... my local garage (not a Merc specialist) took the car to a Bosch Auto Centre and I gather that they have systems comparable to the Merc Star system. At the Bosch Centre they were able to determine that it was the number 3 injector that had failed and that this gives a result that can appear like the fuel is not being pumped properly. The injector will be around £200 and what with the labour and time spent locating the problem, the total bill will be about £450.

I hope that resolves the issue and will let you know how it goes after the work is carried out.

Cheers,

Hugh
