My C220 D 2001 is making a noise at idle and the fan belt(Serpentine belt) is flapping up and down and cauing it to cut the fuel pipe which routes above it. I have replaced the pipe to get the car running again and also changed the water pump which was stiff and had play in it. If you just get the car above idle it runs lovely, the belt runs smoothly and the noise goes away. Could it be sonething like the pas pump or an EGR fault causing the rough idle? I initially thought that one off the accessories( alternator, water pump, pas pump etc had a high resistance and caused the belt to flap but they all seem fine. Tensioner also has plenty of strenghth in it and the new belt I fitted is nice and taught. Is this a common prob. Any help appreciated as pulling lots of hair out here.
Thanks.

9 times out of 10 it is the alternator pulley that causes this as it has some form of one way clutch in it and these seize up and cause the belt to flap around in th wind

Thanks guys. Did check that with the belt off and it turns ok but no clutch mechanism on it. Thought that it should have something like that as I am more familiar with Beemers and vw's.

Result!!

With the grateful help and technical assistance of "Television" I set about replacing the clutch driven pulley on the alternator of my aging W202 C Class. I had doubts whether the end result would justify the expense of purchasing this tiny piece of Mercedes engineering but I had a choice of trying to cure my problem by spending £86.00 or replacing the alternator with a second hand unit which I knew nothing about its history. The cost of this alternative would have been considerably more but may have lasted weeks and given up resulting in me having to buy a new one anyway. Mercedes wanted £531.00 + vat for an alternator but, most importantly, there was not one to be had in UK. I do not know whether this included the pulley, I suspect not!
The end result is that I now have a ten year old vehicle that has covered 140,000 miles and sounds just like it has come out of the showroom. The difference is phenomenal!
Just wanted to take the opportunity to thank this forum, Malcolm especially, for the excellent advice given. Anyone suffering these symptoms should seriously consider this "fix".

Just had a look at eurocarparts for this pulley but couldn't find it. Have any of you got their part number for it?

I guess it's always good to talk. I phoned them up and the part number is 425220020. GBP 58.69 including VAT and delivery. Changed it this morning. Fan belt is now running smoothly without flapping around. Something is still making a ratteling noise down there though. Sounds like the the crank shaft pullley or the guide pulley just above it.... I guess after 186000 miles a few things are starting to get tired.

I too still had a noise but when at sam-units place for oil changes he showed me loose air filter box which dont half make a noise ;)
If you hold it/press it against where its meant to be and engine goes quite then there is a possibility.

I have the same problem with flapping belt, and suspect the alternator pulley. Would this also affect the charging of the battery as I am regularly finding it is low (although use the car a lot for short journeys).

Can somebody explain what special tools I might need to replace the clutch on the alternator, and whether it is a simple task.

Engine is 611961304535 on w210 chassis 220cdi estate 51 plate.

Does anyone have a link for the part at Europarts, I can only find complete alternators listed, and a search on the part number given earlier came up with nothing.

Thanks for help in advance.
