I think you are right. Certainly if I remember right, the auto option comes bundled with cruise and I haven't seen it specified alone for fitment to a manual - at least not in the UK. There is no technical reason aside from the fact that it can't change down when it needs to and you'd need an extra switch on the clutch pedal to disengage it.
I have cruise on the jeep and that's a manual.

Cruise control is nothing to do with any gearbox, man or auto: Some cars have it as standard, on others it was an extra. In no way is it practical to try and add it, the cost is the cost and safety issues.

Cruise control is only ever and always disengaged by the brake pedal,it is nothing to do with cluctch or gearbox.

I have cruise on my Manual A6 Quattro sport, I have seen it on a manual Vauxhall, but I must admit that I have never seen it on a manual MB.

Sorry Malcolm, I have to disagree. On an auto, the brake disengages the cruise, on a manual both the brake and the clutch do it. Otherwise, if you depressed the clutch, the cruise would maintain the throttle and as no longer under load, the engine would overrev.
Its not a big issue and you can get after market cruise control kits for manuals too.

To quote http://www.conrad-anderson.co.uk/cruisecontrols/cruisecontrol-operation.htm
The cruise control can be shut off by any of the following methods:

1. Depressing the brake pedal.

2. Depressing the clutch pedal, if a clutch switch is fitted.

It isn't specifically gearbox related but the advantage on an auto is that the cruise can trigger the kick down if required whereas a manual could over labour the engine (assuming the driver was a bit daft and let it happen). However, as I said above,I don't believe MB fitted cruise to manuals whereas it comes as standard with the auto package, which is why post '98 auto Mercs always have it.

You are right, sorry I was just going to make amends and of course the Tiptronic was used with manual cars up to about 93 I think.
Very sorry

Manual MB's can/do have cruise control.
It can be switched off by using either clutch/brake or stalk, and is very useful. One of the more useful things it does is allow you to bury the accelerator for overtaking and the car will then gradually return to the set cruising speed.

C220 Cdi Manual...with Cruise Control

Ours is also a C220 CDI manual...with cruise control. Came as standard fitment in the car. Although to be perfectly honest, we've never actually used it! Suppose we'll get round to trying it one of these days!

Had another look at the price lists. It's confusing as it says under option 423,
423 5-speed automatic transmission with Tipfunction and Speedtronic cruise control
However, it also says under standard fitment
6-speed manual transmission with Speedtronic cruise control
SO I guess its standard no matter what now. However, I don't believe this was always the case so it may be that older ones were auto only. I remember my dads 94 C180 auto not having it whereas my 95 C220 Auto did.
Getting nurdy now so I'll stop.
Anyway, I love the cruise, its just a shame there aren't many places you can use it these days.

Don't understand, I thought it shut off when you stopped!
With some careful use of lane changes and timing, I can get almost 1 minutes use out of mine on the M62. I'd be interested to hear if Distronic is really any use in these situations.

I love cruise but stopped using it months ago 'cos I found out it used more fuel. On long motorway runs I get approximately 43mpg with cruise and just over 46 without it.

When I don't use it I subconciously seem to speed up on the downhill and ease up going uphill. Seems more fuel efficient.

I must sound really tight!

I have been driving that way deliberatley - keep the throttle constant and let it slow a little up-hill. I've been getting 38 ish which after a petrol V6, I was quite chuffed with. Couldn't be bothered this morning and booted it whenever I got a clear bit of road. Checked the computer when I arrived and its showing 41.8!
Barmy!
