I have kept to the same tyres as car was supplied with - Continental Sports Contact 2 245/40R 17 91W on Rear and 225/45R 17 91W Front.
Front tyres changed at 33k miles- fine, but rear tyres replaced at 20k miles. After another 20K rear tyres are due to be changed again.

Is this normal?

I am used to tyres lasting 30k+ miles on other cars. I am not a fast driver and most of my 15K miles pa is on 50mph limit roads in Suffolk.

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
It is the weight and rear suspension action that does it, as the car goes up and down, this scrubs the tread, most cars are the same in this car group

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I have a C270 estate - I'm the world gentlest driver and I only use the car for long steady motorway runs.

The car came with Bridgestone Turanza's (not noted for long life) and I changed the rears at 19,000 miles, and, to be honest, I'd probably left them a couple of thousand too long.

They were replaced with Michelin Primacy HP's (which are noted for long life). The car has done 15000 miles on those and I would guess they're a little bit more than half worn, but tyres wear faster as they get more worn, so there may only be something like 7-8K left on them.

The fronts are still the originals at 34K, and have quite a bit of tread in the centres but the sides are pretty worn now and they'll need replacing due to that well before they're worn to the legal limit.

:cool:I had a 2003 C220 cdi avantgarde est fitted with Bridgestones....225/50/16 all round, the rear lasted about 15,000 miles, even wear, while the front were ok.This was just with occasional load lugging, bit surprised myself!Maintain 30 psi all round, seems to be just about right,no extreme middle or outer wear, done this on previous BMWs,and present E-class seems ok to me.

My tyres are the same size, rear Conti's lasted 17,000 and they were down to 1.6mm. Fronts still had 4mm. Sounds normal to me.

Same size on mine. The Conti's on the rear managed 15K and the fronts 27K. I replaced the rears with Kumho KU19's and these did 12K. I'm now running Kumho KU31's which I look like they will do the same as the Conti's for about half the price. I have the 7G gearbox which my independant specialist informs me is slightly heavier on the rears.

Same tyres on mine, although mine is the Saloon.

My car is 4 years old this September, my first set of Conti's lasted 2 years and approx 19,000 (both front and rear). I put new Contis on again then and they are nearing the end of their life soon so that will be about 18-19k miles again and just under 2 years on that set. I seem to get pretty similar wear front and rear.

Most of my driving is on country lanes and B roads with pot holes, speed humps and mini roundabouts etc to deal with!

I run my tyres at 40psi as I find it gives much more even wear across the width of the tyre, especially on the fronts as it stops the outside edges running low before the rest of the tyre.

I'd be amazed to get 30,000 miles out of my tyres!

My 2004 C180 gets up to 16k on the rear using Conti Sport Contact 2 (but no more than that), and around 16k+ on the front.

Having changed the front to Michelin Pilot Exaltos they seem to be longer wearing. I suspect the combination of fast (i.e overnight) motorway journeys coupled with daytime trips on west London's potholed roads are the culprits in reducing the tread faster than normal.
