Hi all

I'm searching for a 18/19 reg C220D (facelift) and have found a couple with over 100K miles on the clock which are within budget. They seem like company cars and have been properly serviced/maintained. I just wanted to check whether there are any known issues with the 220D (654) engine as I plan on keeping the car for at least 5 years and will likely be doing 10k a year. Anything else to look out for?

Many thanks

All we know from what‘s been reported back here by members who run the OM654 engine is that the top end is suspect >100k miles with timing chain wear necessitating replacement (so something to check on purchase) so the jury is out at the moment on how many engines may be affected but in all other respects the engine seems to perform well. FSH is a must in my view but running these cars to a high mileage may prove expensive as they are EU6 cars with potential ADBLUE and Nox sensor issues.

thanks. The cars do have 4-5 months of manufacturer warranty remaining so I was thinking of getting a health check done by an indi and getting any issues fixed under warranty, although I suspect the main dealerships may put some of these issues down to wear and tear and not covered by the warranty. I also heard about some camshaft issues on the 654. Thanks again

If it’s from Mercedes their warranty is worth having

I took a E220d to 48 k miles and loved it, great engine and gearbox combo. Long term reliability is still an unknown though

There’s an e-class on autotrader with the OM654 engine and has done 307k miles (2016 car)

It appears they can withstand high miles as there are quite a few with big mileages, I’m happy since I have an E220d with OM654.

Like a lot of cars, much better off being used regularly than sat around doing nothing.

I did 48K miles in 18 months in an E220d with the OM654

I really like the fact that this 2.0 diesel produces as much power and torque as some older 3.0 Diesel engines showing how far the tech has come. I regularly get 700+ miles and my record is 839 in a full standard sized tank and mines is the estate. The engine is fantastic and this guy has done 50k p.a. Which is 1k per week….. tank and a bit

I had 925 miles from a tankful - wanted to go 1,000 but didn't have the opportunity before I handed it back :(

Below is one of my better 180 mile runs to work... I don't think you can get as much now following engine software updates :(

That’s awesome. Mine is an AMG line estate on 20” so won’t ever get that. Have had up to 72 on one trip. I tried an SE saloon on standard wheels which is 300kg lighter and got 74mpg without trying. Awesome car engine and gearbox combination.
