When i start up after a few hours parking the engine struggles to keep constant revs This goes away after a short time yet now the car has started to misfire / backfire when i depress the accelerator pedal quickly? It still goes ok on motorway but is getting sluggish as time goes on. I have just had a service - new plugs filters etc but no change?

Any ides anyone, could this be the MAF?

No tools just squeeze the catch and pull the plug out and try it

Removed electric connection, running fine. How long can i run it with it off before it does any harm? I work away from home (forces) and commute 200 miles to get home would it be ok to leave off for the journey?

I have now removed the MAF but it looks to be clean inside; when i run my finger inside a little bit of black deposit appears but nothing much.

Would this make much differance or could it be the electrical connection at fault?

It needs a new one, just worn out, the cheapest place is any Bosch service center, if there is a part number on the actual element in the tube then you can buy this and £100 cheaper.
ECP do some,,ask them.
Do not buy from Ebay.

It will do no harm without it,,,it may be rather thirsty

Do you mean the electric plug or the MAF actual cylinder?

The number on the MAF is;

Bosch

0 280 217 114

or

000 094 09 48

Had a look on net would you use genuine Bosch parts? ECP have 2 for sale, one for £80 and the other £155, both look the same. I presume one is a copy? What would you recommend.

If the actual sensor in the tube has a Bosch number the worth asking Bosch, I would imagine that both by ECP should be OK and not the rubbish on Ebay

Bought new MAF (Bosch) fitted in 2 mins, running like a dream, if i had owned the car from new i would expect this is how it would have performed, absolutely brill.

Many thanks TELEVISION for your priceless advice which has prob saved me a small fortune, and Parrot of Doom for his excellent pictures.

A happy Merc Owner.
