Hi & Welcome,
If the 'EC' light is on the AC is off. Open the bonnet and check that the compressor starts and stops when the 'EC@ button is pressed. If the compressor doesn't start then you are most likely out of gas. FInd a decent independant AC specialist and have them perform a leak test and re-fill.
There is most likely no dipstick in your dar (age dependant) as MB sealed them for life. However depending upon age and mileage it is probably worth getting the ATF changed. Parrot of doom has an excellent step by step guide on the forum.

I took my C240 to the main dealer where they checked the ATF level for me free of charge.
