My C240 Sport, a 99 model broke down 4 times in one day this week. An RAC man who came out suggested the Crankshaft Position Sensor could be the cause, the car had a few problem starts parking after driving to local shops, the car would start after waiting a little while, then the time to wait got longer. On its last fault it was one hour, then it died in the middle of the road as I slowed down to take a right. It started after another hour, I drove for a while then had a call on my mobile so as I slowed to pull over it died again, waited and again it started. The it died on the way up an hill, the engine revs kept dropping as I drove up the hill until it totally stopped. After about 2 hours its started again.

So far I have taken out the old Crankshaft Position Sensor and heated it up, it had a 1200 ohms reading when cold on its pins and was increasing further as it got hot.

I have since been sourcing a replacement, my part number is BOSCH 0261210142, 99w 18, a 003 153 9528.

I am on the correct path for this repair?

Help needed finding the part,

I have found a supplier called sensors.uk.com and they have two types, a CSS-094 and a CSS-067 and on checking on ebay they are pretty cheap at less than £20 whilst the sensor is £106 at my local Merc. Has anyone experience with the sensors from sensors.uk.com?

I bought a sensor on ebay, it arrived and originated from the above supplier, the diagram of the block connector is shown on ebay and the one sent was supposed to be a CSS-094 but the notches match the CSS-067, as link below, it does not fit my cars wiring,

Am I correct in thinking its a css-094?

It would have been better to have got one from any Bosch service center though even then some £70, they are not worth any more than £20, I cannot help with the type numbers, surely they will change it over

I have just managed to find a diagram of the block connector on the one with code CSS-094, as follows,

http://api.exigesolutions.com/Pictures/568621/02400205103.JPG?MaximumWidth=200&MaximumHeight=200

It seems the ebay chap has sent me a css-067 that has been put in the wrong box, am sending it back.

I have found one sold online for less than £20, also noted a site linked on the form that sells Merle brands, price is about £40 + delivery. www.incarmotorfactors.co.uk

BOTH CSS-094 AND CSS-067 SENSORS have the same connectors and DO NOT fit the C240 W202.

Here is the solution,

For Crankshaft Position Sensor for the C240 W202 sport, 1999

Symptom, engine not starting after getting warm or cutting out,

Key to finding the C240 Crankshaft Position Sensor is to look for the upgrade,
part 0031539628
previous part number,
0031539528

Alternatives are:

Brand: Erste Wahl

Part number: M-9219

Cost £19.99 from,

Both the above sell on ebay,

Others looking for this part should avoid sensors.uk.com parts css-067 and css-094 sold by many on ebay as the correct part but its block connector is wrong.

Note the sensor is held in place at the rear of the center of the engine by a M6 16mm bolt, it does not have to be a specific Mercedes bolt.

If I was going to replace one as a precaution, I would not be replacing a genuine one with a £15 part.

Interesting thing Alex, the 3 pin version was £23 from mercedes and the 2 pin Bosch are £90 from mercedes or £71 from Bosch, someone is having a laugh and it must be Bosch in this case again, the most greedy company in the world on car parts.

Take a MAF, Bosch sell the sensor only £70, put it in a plastic pipe housing and £150:(:(
