went to view a 1998 C240 Sport yesterday.

only 70K Miles and in fantastic condition.

Found 1 thing that worried me

Took off the oil filler cap and found some traces of the the old "Mayo"

Are these V6s prone to head gasket problems or is it likely to be condensation

the car had full service history and ran very smoothly with the temp gauge exactly where it should be

Water in header tank was fine

Is this a "walk away" job

cheers

Don't worry. Most of them suffer with that. It is not a head gasket problem its just a build up of condensation at the very most top of the engine. It seems like short journeys add to it too.

Hope this helps

Fully agree. There was always a bit of mayo on my E240 - but no water usage or other issues.
In the time I've been on this forum, I don't think I've ever heard of a head gasket failure on the V6. A number of concerns like yours, but no actual failures.
