C240 Sport 2.4L W202 engine
Hi Guys,

I have a year 2000, C240 2.4 Ltr Sport with a leaky oil cooler, leaking at the point at which it is attached to the engine. Thick coffee coloured emulsified oil in the expansion tank and the same in oil filler cap. Oil /coolant has sprayed all over the v belt. I cannot find a workshop manual anywhere for this car so I would be really pleased with some answers to my questions; Please see below.

1. Is the water pump housing shared with the engine and separated by a gasket? I guess this would explain the emulsification of the oil and water? (Dipstick oil dip seems normal colour. BUT there is mayonnaise in the filler cap that appears to have been there for a long time.
2. Is oil cooler the culprit rather than the water pump gasket? I have not attempted to remove it yet. I am not sure if this a gasket failure here causing the emulsification.
3. Lastly, what do you recommend to get rid of the emulsified oil, a little Gunk mixed in with the wash through?

I would really appreciate any help and information.

:)

Water/oil mixing, leaking oil cooler would indicate either the oil cooler is at fault or the "O" ring seals that are fitted between the cooler and the engine need replacing.

As above, 2 little "o"-rings between the cooler and engine, easy job and cheap parts from MB

If you are only worried by mayo in the OIL filler cap, on that engine it is normal and doesnt mean there is a leak. It will be worse in winter than summer, change the oil when the weather begins to warm up, and of course longer journeys will help to reduce it more than short ones making it worse.

Thank you that's very reassuring and a very good start. Haynes don't seem to do a manual for the C240 W202 2.4 Liter. Which other MBs are similar (V'block and not straight!) that I could use for similar reference.. anybody know?
Thank you again all that responded to my plea for info!

The Haynes 202 manual is ok for everything apart from the engine (and gearbox). This might be covered in the 210 manual, I'd imagine. I have mayo on my oil cap in winter on the V6 C280 and as other have said, nothing to worry about.
