Hi Guys & Gals!!
didnt mean to sound like Jimmy Saville!

I have a problem with a C250 Turbo D estate- 150k 1998 in that it seams to start and run Ok but when pushed up hill the fuel delivery cannot cope with the demand from the engine and after a very short time maybe 1/4 mile it conks out just like its running out of fuel!! After checking the fuel filter (replaced recently) its empty so lots of priming later off it goes but again as soon as there is demand from the engine it runs out.
There alos seems to be a lot of air in the fuel lines as you can clearly see air in the fuel and on the return pipe from the top of the filetr housing someone prior to my ownership has fitted a solinoid valve.
This is a car I brought to take and leave in Spain but so far I am a bit dissapointed in that it seems very slugginsh and now this fuel problem

Any help would be greatley apreiciated

Thanks Adrian

The o-rings on the fuel lines will need to be replaced. Also, there are two fuel filters to be changed. There is (I think) an inline filter as well in the housing that the main fuel filter is bolted to.

This is probably the most common old Merc diesel problem. It's worth doing thoroughly and properly now so the problem doesn't recur somewhere else on the fuel system. It does rely on being airtight to work.

When sorted, your power should return as well. It is slow as there is air in the fuel lines.

If you do a search there will be plenty of advice on here.

this is a dead ringer for a blocked fuel tank strainer.

fairly self explanetory when you get the new pipes and seals. just replace 1 at a time then they go back to the correct places and all should be well. its usually the clear plastic pipes that give the problems, or rather the o rings (seals) that seal them that fail. theres also, as simon mentioned, the pre filter in the alloy housing the fuel filter fastens to, but if the clear pipes are completely empty, my money would be on the tank strainer.(filter inside the tank where the fuel is drawn from the tank along the fel pipes to the engine.)

i replaced mine on my w210 e class, cant remember how much it was but a new strainer and o ring seal was under £20 to buy from dealer.

Still problems with Fuel

Hi Guys still getting problems with the fuel and air in it
I have changed all the clear pipes and the only ones that run without air is thew 2 middle pipes fitted on the top of the main filterthere is one right between the fixing bolts and other that comes of the bottom of a black tube- both are full of fuel theleft hand one did have a solinoid valve of some sort in it but we have removed the valve and just fitted a new pipe, looks like fuel is going into this pipe and comming out the one immediatly below it both have lots of air in them, the right hand side one also has air in it
i havnt yet taken the vehicle out to see if the dying problem has been cured as all this air in the system cant be right.
does anyone know what theis after market solinoid valve could be for? as i said it was fitted to the top l/h clear pipe when looking from the front??
Also does anyone have a diagram of the fuel pipe layout so I can trace which pipe goes where??
lastly as Turbo Pete say is this now looking like the fuel tank strainer if so is this a big job???
Thanks to all
Adrian

it may be slightly easier on an estate as the tank is under the car, not in the boot behind the back seats. it took me about 2 hours to change it on my e class, with nothing more specialised than a jack, axle stands, a bit of carpet to lie on, cans to drain the fuel into, a funnel and some spanners. theres a post i did of mine in the diy section, come to think of it! different car, but it should give you a rough idea.

the left pipe of the 3 together is the return feed to the tank. this prevents air being drawn in from the return line so yes, its needed. unlikely to be aftermarket, it should be a black unit on the end of a plastic pipe connected to the injector pump. its possible that a 202 c class wont have a tank strainer. i would have to look it up myself.
