Ordinarily I am reasonabily happy with my Benz, it goes like stink in first and second , although tails off a bit after that. This however becomes a real pain when pulling a mere 1000kg of "wheeled accomodation". I cannot get above 40 mph on anything more than the slightest inclines, even using the manual gear selection. Should I be looking to tune or chip, help please.

Something doesn't sound quite right here. I use a C250TD auto estate and successfully tow a 1460Kg caravan. Even up the long steep motorway inclines across Normandy it will do 55mph in third gear (about 3300 rpm), and will go faster but gets a bit "rorty".

Are you sure the turbo is blowing properly, i.e. no loose air hoses or the like? Is the air filter clogged? Does it smoke (black) under acceleration? Is it manual or auto?

Possible cause

FIrst as said try air filter, then put a new diesel filter on, that is more likely to cause lack of power.

I second the remark about having the filters replaced. Even at 215k my C250TD auto pulls strongly in all gears. Although I don't tow a mobile chicane.

Job done

Filters were all okay so finally bit the bullet and took it into my local dealer. half an hour later I left in a virtual fliying machine. The hose to the vacuum pump had been resting on the turbo inlet and had worn a hole through therefore losing vacuum. Excellent service from the dealer who charges by the half hour and took nothing for the new hose.
Thanks again to all who responded.

C250 TD Loss of power

ive bought a C250 TD 1998 just a month ago and im having loss of power from the start. i wont pick as fast as it should and after going about 60+ it starts to slow down in picking up speed and the max ive hit is 85 mph which is crap for a 2.5 TD. ive had the turbo checked and works fine. you've mentioned you had a hose replaced could you tell me exactly which one it is so i could get it checked out.is it the one from the air filter to the turbo. its like a fat pipe??????
