C270 cdi Gearbox removal

Hi
Am new to this forum, I need to know if the TDC sensor has to be removed to enable the gearbox to be parted from the engine, I have removed all bolts etc the box is splitting from the engine except for the top, with out taking all engine covers off I am not sure how to get the tdc sensor out or even if I need to.
Is there a dowel at the top of the gearbox going into the block that may be a tight fit ?
It has the manual box

I don't know about the TDC sensor, but can confirm there IS a dowel which, as you say, can be tight.
