Hi all, just changed car to a 2002 C270 CDI. Well pleased with the car except on cold start engine struggles to idle until its warm. Dealer suggested it required a new set of fuel injectors at £250 each plus labour (OUCH). Could it be anything else?

Injectors do go but I doubt it needs all 5. Have they showed you proof that they are all faulty? A leak-off test is very quick and easy and you could watch and see the results if you insisted.

Type 49, why is it that MB always fit new injectors when almost every other firm has them serviced at a fraction of the price, and this changing them all when only one or possibly two are faulty. I note that the old injectors are never returned to the customer . Any idea.

Thanks Malcolm

I wish I had 1% of the answers to these questions! Maybe if they're under warranty, they change them all to eliminate a bad batch problem. If the customer's paying though, surely they should only change the ones that have failed?

Sadly this is not the case, having had 2 cars this month where they have all been replaced at some horrendous cost.

It reminded me of the guy that had a seat problem. MB quote was 4 new motors, new switch bank, new memory module and wiring harness, that will be £1.100 thank you.

Thanks for replies. Is fitting injectors a DIY job? Is it worth me shelling out for diagnostic equipment to set up? How much is diagnostic equipment and where do i buy it from? As i plan to keep the car the diagnostic equipment would probably (and unfortunatly) be used again.

Hi there, you might want to check the EGR Valve. My car also suffered from idle problems when cold, had the EGR Valve thoroughly cleaned and now it's idling perfectly.

The EGR Valve stands for the 'Exhaust Gas Return Valve'. Apart from that you'll need to get others on the forum to help out, if you do a search on the forum you might even find a 'how to' on cleaning the EGR. I had some MB mechanics clean mine out, which they said was completely sooted up! As the name describes, it's part of the exhaust system. Once clean the car's idle on cold start up was perfect.

The EGR valve sits in the exhaust manifold normally towards the rear.
when it fails it sticks in the partly open possition causing poor idle.

Sorted At Last

I have cleaned the MAF (including surrounding pipe work and also cleaned the egr valve (used carb cleaner). Car runs like a dream. Just in time as the car was booked into the stealership next week for them to replace 5 injectors. Thanks everybody for all of your help.:D

Really glad we could help. Changing 5 injectors would have cost a huge amount of money and you would have been gutted when the problem had not gone away. Worse, once the MB mechanics had realised that the injectors had not fixed the problem, they would have probably cleaned the EGR and you would have been non the wiser!!!

Good luck.
