Hello, Has anyone removed the middle (muffler or resonator) from a C32 AMG Exhaust System?

I expect that the note would be a bit richer (what I am after), but I have a concern with the vehicle would have more of a "drone sound" when in the higher revs (on the motorway etc). As I have an estate I would not want it "droning" away on longer trips.

Would it be just simply replacing the removed part with a straight tube which sleeves the existing pipes?

Cheers for any info, airbag

removing any silencer will result in additional droning. if you went ahead with this you could replace the removed silencer with straight tube. however if the silencer has padding and/or baffles in it, try just removing some of the internal sound deadening in the box or just replace it with a resonator. this SHOULD make the exhaust note a bit richer without excessive droning. however, be aware that on some cars, most of the silencing is done by the middle silencer as opposed to the rear one!

Hi Pete, thanks for your reply.
Its a tricky one, that's why I was hoping to hear from someone who had actually performed this adjustment on this model, nothing worse than going backwards with taking expensive parts in and out.

Hi ,

If you were to remove the centre silencer you would have a little more sound nothing major but a better tone and a tad more performance . My good friend has a m3 and this has the centre silencer removed (sleeved pipe) this has a very nice tone not loud or intrusive but just right with improved responce.

Hi,
No I was wondering if the exhaust system as standard was stainless?
If sleeving, then you would need to tig weld the sleeve on I guess.

I am in warrington in the north west.

If people just sleeve with clamps and gunge then great, but I expect welding would be a superior method.

as i already stated you need to check which silencer does most of the silencing before removing it. it may be the rear on a BMW, but on a FORD, its the centre one that does the work. best method would be to weld any sleeve you fit. not sure about the AMG variants but i read on another thread that the w203 doesnt have a stainless exhaust as standard but, as i said, the AMG could be different

This one is possibly the simplest of the night to rectifiy !!

As you would with any other noise issue with your vehicle .......... make full use of the superb sound system ................. and turn the ****** radio up.

Thanks Thumper! , a good idea, especially when I have another topic in about my crap Comand Audio unit... which only sounds good when I have it cranked right up!!

What I am after, is to do the exhaust so I only have to listen to that.. and not the radio.

BTW: I love your sig!

Solution 2:

A man who is fixated with his exhaust not (and who is'nt).......... should go to the nearset real estate auction, and purchase a 3 mile long tunnel ........ hang your head out the window, and then any exhaust note will sound sweet !!

Now stop waisting my time ................ there's serious tech issues to answer on this forum ....... you've had 2 now ................. lol

I would argue that listening to a sweeter C32 tone is an important issue!

i would beg to differ on that Clive. i had mk3&4 escorts and a sierra where i simply removed the rear silencer, found it to be not much noisier so made a replacement rear section with just a resonator box. i put that in so that if i was ever questioned i could say the car had the number of silencers it was designed to have. police were a nightmare about such things at the time, in the area i was living in at the time. a work collegue at the same time took the centre box out of his sierra and it made an awful racket! he ended up doing the same as me, rather than doing the same type of thing with the middle box! as i think i said earlier in the thread, it depends on the car, the type of silencer used and its size etc to which is the better one to mess around with! my cars never sounded anything like as loud as the boy racer brigade do nowadays! mine sounded almost standard but with a sweet rasp when worked hard!

Thats what I am after. It would look stupid having a nice MB and having it sound too "hooney". I was just after a tweak which created a bit more "roarrr" when kicked down!

Mainly Mercedes
A lot of C32 owners in the States have done this mod. They call it "resonator delete". Have a search on www.mbworld.org for some info.

I have removed the resonator on my CLK430, and it raised the volume and deepened the note slightly, but not to an annoying level.

(I only cut the thing out because it had a rust hole in it, but was delighted with the result)

You could just get some baffels removed from the rear box ?
