The rears are done, very pleased with them,
Before,
20181008_090559.jpg After, 20181008_151756.jpg 20181008_152501.jpg 20181008_155429.jpg 20181008_160033.jpg Second pic looks orange for some reason, but it's not.
Also did a little job while the wheels were off, that's been annoying me,
20181008_090729.jpg 20181008_151230.jpg But the jury's still out on the wheel spacers, it definitely needed them to make it a bit more aggressive, especially when lowered, but think I might have gone a bit wide , 12mm spacers.

If the tyre pokes out past the bodywork I think that it may attract the attention of the police.
(And may throw up stones onto the body causing chips in your paint, plus lots of dirt)

I normally post pictures of my calipers, every chance I get

Just got the stickers from Bulgaria (second time I'm buying from this chap, first in 2016) - excellent quality, and he does the size I want (65mm).

Front ones painted today, think I'm gonna take the spacers off the back and wont put front one's on, they stick out about 7mm beyond the arch :( . Should've gone for 5mm spacers they would've been spot on . Never mind you live and learn.

This is the old set of stickers, done in May 2016, pic was taken in March this year. I re-painted the calipers this August (second pic) and will put the new stickers on shortly (as soon as I decide, whether to go white again, or black or silver) ...

I think you know John that I don't paint the actual face as I prefer a direct metal - metal contact with the wheel. I use fine line masking tape to go round it and the actual mating surface just gets a clean with a clean and strip disc.

Something like this: -

NSR done.jpg

I also did the same on the 190 with the same effect.

Lots of quality discs come painted. My fronts were Apec and only the exposed parts were painted. The rears were Bosch and the whole disc is painted, even the wear surface.
I like things as they were originally. In the case of the SL I found the original colour to be gunmetal grey front and black on the rear.
From experience I've found that expensive caliper paint is not necessary. Calipers do not get very hot all in everyday use. IMG_20180518_183548.jpg IMG_20180510_115830.jpg
If I need specific colours I buy a spray can and empty it out, then brush it on. Spraying is a waste of effort unless the surface is completely smooth.

Interesting thread I do like to see painted calipers and disc hubs especially when most cars come with them very visible nowadays

As an aside my daughter has just bought a 1 series BMW - never was a fan but they’ve grown on me over time. Anyway, I was taken along for the ride to give my sixpeneth before the money was handed over. It was a franchise car and fairly new (7k miles) so I had little to say except for the rusty condition of the brake hubs viewed through those nice 5 spoke alloys. When this was mentioned to the salesman his reply to a request for them to be painted before hand over was a peach, he maintained that they didn’t paint hubs due to the fact the it would affect the thermal cooling characteristics of the brake disc and they would warp. What a peach I had to score him 10/10 for that one, looks like I’ll get that job next year then lol.

My son takes after me. He gets his wheels off to clean. His BMW discs were getting a bit cloudy after 12 months but he polished them. They were still shiny when he trade it in. IMG-20181009-WA0001.jpg The hubs on his new car are already going the same way.
