cam followers?

Howdy all,

I notice when i start my 1990 560SEL, the motor will run REALLY rough for a few seconds, sometimes thump really loud, then it will settle right down and quiet down and idle nicely. When shes warmed up its as quiet as a mouse and doesnt start like that. Ive been doig research and am wondering if it could be the cam followers? has anybody else had these symptoms?

If your car is fitted with hydraulic tappets then that would be the likely culprit, maybe a sticky one. If the cam followers ( then probably also the cam ) were worn to the extent of making that much noise, then it probably wouldn't return to 'normal' quiet.

There are hydraullic elements between the rockerarms and the valve stems on your engine , probably these are draining down due to wear and taking a short time to fill after a cold start. #41 in this diagram.http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...&L=765.706&CT=M&cat=322&SID=05&SGR=060&SGN=02.
Possibly an oil change or a change to a different grade of oil will help.
