Hi all

I get an intermitant P0391 fault code. There's no particular event or timing to it and there is no problem with engine running and performance (that I can tell!) Can go days without it showing up and then twice in two days, so I'm assuming its the sensor breaking down.
So does anyone know which sensor it actually is ? Or been here before ?? I know it sounds stupid but I alwasy get confused with "sides", Left / right and which direction I'm supposed to be looking from (Drivers position was my assumption ?)
These engines have 4, 2 on each bank In/Out, so its finding which is which.

Thanks

You really need Star. I'd suggest that with anything timing chain related you get it looked at by an indy. Some M272 and M273 engines have had issues with the balance shaft which I believe manifests itself as a cam timing error. @alexanderfoti or one if the other Indy's can possibly confirm.

Its just such an intermittent fault I'd thought it was more likely sensor. I swopped two over and the fault didn't appear for days. Lost the fault code though. Seems I need to educate myself on balance shaft issues now !

This is a good site that you can check (with your vin number) if your engine is in the troublesome range.

Seems like with an engine code of 273965 then I'm into the newer revised componants period, so thats a posative. Also the codes mentioned are not the one I get. Not to say its not related but given what I've just read its not the "go to" issue, need to keep investigating.
My history with the pulsation dampener fix recently makes me look deeper these days...

Also a "go to" regular big problem on my FFRR turned out to be a minor home fix, so ever optamistic. After all its a MB, legendery build quality you know !!

Smart + others :)
Depending on the fault code, there maybe modified cam solenoids available.

Check for any sign of oil at the connectors, doesn't take much to throw a fault code had a intermittent fault on a cam position sensor which turned out to be a little oil leaking from through the sensor.

I'll do a bit more investigating at the weekend, need to better understand the anatomy of this engine. I'll check for leaks and also change a couple around again and see if the code changes or moves. As it happens got a new consignment of Gunk this week ! lol
