Hi All

Before I start.. thanks Malcolm and all for the tips on the electical issues on my CLK 230k Cabrio.. it's booked in to Mercury in Aldershot on Friday. I have found them very good and reliable....

anyway... I am trying to find out how often the Cambelt/chain would need changing on this type of car? It's done 117k now and I'm worried as I can't find any evidence that it has been changed before. It does seem a bit rattly but then others have suggested that all 230k's are like that!

Duplex chain, forget about it unless it is very noisy.

Cheers blobcat... thats one less thing to worry about... already facing a £500 bill for diagnostic and repair of the electrical fault (assuming it is the SAM) and a Service A... could do without the chain being replaced as well!

Sometimes it it easy to confuse the timing chain with the idler ass; for the fan belt, timing chains can rattle for the first few seconds from start up. Idler noise would be there all of the time, your milage is too low to worry about the chain.

Being new to the world of MB are all 'new' MB engines chain driven?
Having recently sold a Discovery 3 that needs the whole body lifting off to replace the belt at around 100k, I like the idea of having a 'trusty' chain.

They have always been chain, and have never used a belt, our cars go a long way before replacement is required, normally in exccess of 200k miles.
