Hi Folks,

Please help me with my new issue on my MB GL Class 350.

Issue Description:
- I can’t open tailgate by button when car is locked, but…
- I can open it by remote key and…
- I can open it by button when car is not locked
- I can’t close and lock it by the red button on tailgate (lock button), but…
- I can close it by the red close button on tailgate (close button) and
- I can close is by the remote key
When I try to open it when car is locked, it does nothing like dead button. But it works perfectly when car is not locked.

Since few months ago I found out that I had to have (time to time) second try to open it, when car was locked. I just gave it second chance, and I didn’t care. But now I see, I should care.

So, please, do you have any advice guys?
Thanks in advance
Mates

I’m not sure exactly what you mean but I had an E350 estate purchased new in 2016.

If car is locked you can open tailgate by pushing and holding in the open tailgate button on the remote once open just push the button on the tailgate and it will close and on mine it would flash the indicators 3 times to show it has locked, you cannot of course open tailgate by pushing the open button on the tailgate when car is locked.

I could not close my tailgate but using the button on the remote key.

Interesting. I can open and close the tailgate using the tailgate button on the remote key on the R350.

I can't close the tailgate on my CLS with the remote but I can close it by using the button on the drivers door

Perhaps there is a menu somewhere that can change it?

Yes mine was the same but I rarely used the buttons as generally when tailgate is open and I’m at the back I would just push the close button on tailgate.

Robin,
I can open and also close tailgate by remote key button (pushing and holding in the remote button). It works fine.

I was usually opening tailgate by button on tailgate when car was locked. It worked till now fine :( I just opend tailgate while locked car, put the things (shopping) in and close it by the right red button on the tailgate (close and lock button)… and car was immediately locked. But red right button on tailgate does not work now:( It works only left red “close” button.

I’m not sure how useful the ability is to open the tailgate with the remote button whilst car is locked is, I did this in France when camping in a forest, I went to the car to get a hoodie pushed the button and locked the car then noticed whilst walking away that I had left the key inside the car.

And yes it did lock with the key inside which made the next several hours interesting.

My GL was not possible to lock with lock button on tailgate when remote key was inside.

I really miss that functionality: before it failed, I was able operate with tailgate without remote key. Open it by button on tailgate (while car was locked) and after that to close and LOCK also without remote key and go away. It is not working now, and I don’t know why

I am just trying to findout why my tailgate button (on tailgate) stopped working while car is locked. And I was just describing my experience, how usefull it was (until now). It was working the same way like on standard door for driver/passengers. It was not necessary to search for the remote key everytime when I was just going to luggage compartmen. But it stopped working on tailgate week ago.

I may be thick here (likely) but you should not be able to open the tailgate vis the tailgate button whilst car is locked but you can open it by pressing and holding the remote button, this opens the tailgate but the car remains locked so when you next close the tailgate the car is secure.

That's what had me confused.
I think he must have KG so as long as the key is in his pocket it will open.
The implication is the KG has failed if so.

You are right. My remote key was still deep in the pocket…

But what is strange, that red lock button on tailgate also stopped working even though the car is not locked. I can’t close tailgate and lock the car with this button (padlock symbol) now. This button started to do absolutely nothing! Only the red close tailgate button works. (Note: I do have two red buttons on tailgate : 1) close button 2) close and lock button)

Sounds to me like a keyless go antenna failure.
It isn't detecting the presence of the key so isn't operating the buttons.

Thanks, LostKiiwi, is it possible to check somehow this theory?

What still keeps me thinkong about it is, that other standard door is possible open with remote key in my pocket. And the fact, that red lock buton on tailgate does not work for close and lock tailgate ist still strange for me.

Try locking the tailgate with your key in your hand, then with the key out of range.

I know with mine that if I press the lock button and my keys are too close to the car, it won't do anything.
The normal close works fine.
I think it thinks the keys are still in the car so will not lock.

s5tuart thank for your post. I’ll try that in the evening, coz my wife took the car in the morningBut it changed one day and I didn’t change anything (key, battery, or my pocket ).

What sometimes happend was, that car locked by itself after closing (not locking!) tailgate. I was just putting stuff in the luggage space, than close tailgate and trying to enter the car and car locked after 1-2 seconds when tailgate closes. Strange, isnt it?

You'd need Star to test it properly.
If you have a decent code reader that can read all the control modules it may already be showing an error.
