Can a ERG make a ML270cdi cut out at idle speed?

My 2003 ML270cdi does not want to idle. If you rev it or drive it, it runs perfectly, but when you leave it to idle, it cuts out after a short while or if put your foot on the brake to select a gear it cuts out straight away.:confused:

thx Malcom, how would i check if its stuck, also, would it run perfectly if u keep the revs above 1000 but stall if u left the throtal in this condition.

Most just unscrew them and take them off,, or you could block one vacuum pipe and see if you can blow down the return to inlet pipe.

i beg to differ. the egr can be opened fully at idle without stalling, the ecu does exactly this for 40 seconds after returning to idle.

OK and thank you.. it is recorded as such,,and I have been taught that it must stay closed at idle

with, say the 613, the basic star egr test is done at idle. the air mass is monitored and will be circa 500mg/hub with egr closed and circa 250mg/hub with egr open. when the diesels are idling you can hear the egr close after approx 40 secs. this is the time to test for egr sticking, with valve closed or open tap repeatedly with hammer, then move the valve to the other position and see if the air mass changes. alternatively open then close the valve, then watch the closed air mass value while you tap with hammer - if it goes up from say 450 to 500 this shows it is tending to stick slightly open.

This is very interesting. I guess it is not DIY job then. I have cleaned it due to having black smoke comming out but did not know how to test if it works.
