Exhaust gas recirculation. It recirculates exhaust gas back to the engine air intake, reducing emissions caused by burning normal air. It tends to result in a degree of soot buildup on certain related parts.
Normally in the exhaust manifold, when driving on light throttle it opens and returns gases back to the inlet, where they go through the engine again. When they fail they can stick partly open causing a poor idle
