Are you talking about coil packs or spark plugs. My wife's slk 171 for 1 were £25 from ecp . mb probs wanted £100 for 1.
Coil packs, my car knowledge is so dated I was looking for a single coil pack that would be bolted to the car engine bay!!

Sorry not you. The other poster .

The coil packs go over the spark plugs and replace the old style distributor cap ,rotor arm , set up .

£80 for 4 is a good price . the single ones that control 4 plugs for the likes of vauxhalls are in excess of £100 to £150 .

Got you. I'm going back a few years. They are still on offer, I might buy them and pick up some new plugs as well, I can't hurt. Thanks.

Its best doing both then you're not guessing if a miss fire remains. Some people buy 1 and keep swapping them over until the car runs OK. But if 2 packs are going down 4 is the way to go. They tend to fail around the 60k to 80 k mark.

The car is 13 years old with just under 50k on the clock. Thanks for the advice.

Is the engine revving out fully when in neutral?
I'd have a look at the throttle and see if it's opening fully.
I've no idea whether its a manual linkage or electronic.

I am not sure if there is a throttle cable, I can try this later. It does have the feeling of not being on full throttle.

VVT issue?
I did see a episode of "Wheeler Dealers" where they worked on a car with this, cannot remember what car it was. The fault was a leaky oil filled valve that adjusted the cam valve timing thing.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and letting me post none MB related issues, rather than spend money on what might be the issue I will book into the garage. Luckily they are nice and have a good reputation for not taking the p**s.

Worth changing the plugs anyway if they've never been done, with the age of the car and all.

I doubt vvt would even be in play at low revs , low speeds. I have heard of the high lift bolt snapping on Toyota vvt engines , but that just caused no extra oomph when hitting the redline.

What happened to the hot brake drum???? And a bad coil pack will turn on the MIL light, so is it on? And a scanner will tell you which cylinder is misfiring.

If the plugs have not been done, check them as they could be carbon'd up (is that a word??). Next I would check the coil packs as mentioned. It does sound like a spark related issue. If you have a friend with even a cheap diag kit it will show engine related codes

There is no oomph when the car revs, nothing at all, if anything power seems to die off and not increase. It's like it slowly increases near to the red.

Nothing in the end, probably still getting warm when driven. So a bad coil pack will switch on an MIL light, nothing is on.

The plugs were changed about over a year ago, so I could change them. I don't know anyone with a diag kit I'm afraid.

I will change the plugs and go from there. I picked up the ones with the four contact points before, are they better than the ones with a single point? If you use a single point do you have to set the gap?
