I have had a bad battery for a while now and al sorts of gremlings been happening, like gearbox shudder in reverse for first few feet, rough running at low speeds and a few other niggles, however put a new battery in today and took it for a blast and all seems well now.

In the end the old battery would not hold any charge so wondering if driving with battery that's dead it could cause problems.

When a battery cell goes high resistance the the voltage will be too low to start correctly. When the cranking voltage is too low, the ECU's cannot set correctly and many parts of the car will not run correctly. This can put fault codes in the system, the main affected one is the gearbox ECU that only has a tiny memory, so when in for a service do ask them to clear it.

Sorry Malcom you mean clear the faults on both the ECU and TCU, can this be done by disconnecting battery for four hours to reset the values.

If the gear shift are all fine then no problem, it is the TCU only that might be affected and we always say clear that one, but at the same time it only takes 15 mins to join up and clear the lot.
If the car is running sweet then leave it, disconnecting the battery will not clear fault codes
