I wonder if someone would be kind enough to offer a few thoughts!

I have a 2006 mecedes CLK 2.2 diesel, which was running fine other than every now and then I would turn the ignition key it would go through the pre start checks etc then not start on final twist of the key. This was not a major problem as all I did was take the key out put it back in again and it would start, probably only happened a couple of times a week. Now however it wont start at all, it is almost as if it has become immobilised in some way, everything else works lights pre ignition lights, battery showing at 12v, fuel pump whirs, auto box selects with brakes depressed etc it just wont turn over at all on the last turn. I have plugged a bog standard code reader (OBD2, I also have a FIAT so it gets used quite often) in and it reads no faults, which is unsurprising as I am getting no warning lights. As said the battery appears fine just wondered logically what you would check next and at what point to raise the whit flag. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Not easy but as the key turns all the way to the start position it could be the starter or the relay.

thanks television. The starter relay sits in the fuse box in the engine compartment is that correct? It seems a simple swap so will try first, I have googled but cant find a ready supply could you suggest where best to source one or indeed how t check the current one is shot? As for the starter motor it crossed my mind but was working so well prior to this that I am trying to convince myself its not developed a fault (niave I know!).

If you have a volt meter you can check, on the starter motor there are 2 cables, one very thick and this is all time live 12 volt, when the key is turned to start the thin cable should also have 12 volt on it, if there is not then go back to the K40 starter relay.

Great suggestion thanks I don't have a volt meter I will try and borrow one. Thought I may just replace the starter relay as it looks affordable, that said I think this is only available from a dealer.

Could be the contacts inside the starter, hit it with a hammer.

Well a slight development had some clarity of thought after televisions comments and sniffed around the circuit my logic being that turning the ignition that last bit will initiate a flow of current to the starter motor and started by pulling and looking at the fuses as they are most accessible. Found a "20" fuse had blown replaced and it blew again as soon as I turned the key the last bit, tried again and same thing, only difference being that the starter motor clicked to try and start. Any thoughts as to why I am overloading the circuit? I am stumped would a stuck starter motor be the problem? Maybe a loose wire shorting something out? Thanks for any thoughts

Not sure how successful this will be but uploaded two pictures to photobucket and put the link below. The fuse in question is the yellow one in the top left corner. On the first photo I have taken out a larger relay type switch which sits in front of it to get a better view. Cant find a fuse box number, where would this be?

That is fuse 52 the starter relay fuse, the relay that you have removed is the starter relay, relay S
