OK, so I approached deceased woman's two sons this morning and they are both in agreement the car can be sold and monies returned to my fathers account. I wasn't looking forward to asking but it had to be done.

The car was purchased on Tues 10th Apr and the latest post has been checked. No V5 returned yet.
Any ideas on how long this is likely to be?

Thats a sensible result

I think so Alistair. Dad is not too worried about reclaiming the 11 months road tax back but again, that can't be done, as far as I know, without the V5? I'll do it for him, but again, the refund will be in her name as its the one on the V5.

I feel pretty bad for the two sons. One has flown back from Japan expecting a quick funeral date and they don't even have a death certificate yet. The other is a teacher in London on indefinate bereavement leave, both waiting for the cremation go ahead for some closure.
Mountains of paperwork to wade through and her will was written with help from a "financial expert" so that will take some unravelling.

That's not in the least unusual, I waited over a month when I put my private plate on even though it was done on-line

It appears that receipt of the V5C is a bit hit and miss. I recently received mine in three days but this was organised online at the main dealer if that makes any difference.

Update................funeral was Friday. Didn't enjoy that:(

V5 arrived yesterday and picked up this evening.
It looks like I'm going to have to advertise it and sell privately as the dealer is avoiding me.

He asked what I wanted for the car (paid £3900) and I said I'd be happy with £3500. He said he'd call me back.............I've heard nothing. Considering the car has done 3 miles from his forecourt since the sale I thought a £400 reduction was fair. Seems not.

I'll give him one more chance tomorrow now I have the V5 and after that I'll not bother him again. I think he wants to pay trade- in value and make a killing.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems... they used to joke that "where there's a will there's always relatives" and while much of the law is intended to protect people, once the magic word "probate" is uttered, all hell breaks loose. But from the backgoround and story to date it seems that all concerned are decent people and I'm sure it will all work out okay.

So far as the dealer is concerned, the car that is now on offer to him has had another owner/keeper added to the registration history and that probably takes care of the £400 difference betwen the price paid and your anticipated return price - which seems reasonable except that this leaves him with all the admin, stockholding and resale cost and when it is resold it's liable to achieve less than your father paid - that's a reasonable forecast based ourely on time and events.... So on the face of it he would be losing out by taking it back at the price you would expect. I guess in the circumstances you would probably get a better deal by selling it privately (and by the way it should be worth checking whether the warranty the dealer provided is transferable).

Deepest sympathy to all concerned and best of luck in closing this off satisfactorily.

Couldn't imagine the dealer would want it on his books for that price.

The dealer is in the business to make money. He obviously has already had a few hundred quid profit out of the car already and he sure wont want the car standing him more money than it did last time. Difficult one that. Best to sell it privately if you can cope with the time wasters

I have decided not to bother with the dealer again. As stated, he is in business to make money and although he could make a profit, he obviously doesn't want to know.

Going to visit Dads this afternoon and take some photos and put it up for a private sale.
Anyone want an 2011 automatic Kia Rio 1.4 49k miles in excellent condition with a new MOT ? :D

Was that not a line from "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel?
I think it was an old Indian proverb.

I dunno who it was but the same bloke said:

- I bet Craig's dying to follow up with a sucking seeds line now!

Hmmm- the ‘if at first’ one was altered in Scotland...(to be read with a strong scots accent):-
“If it first ye dinna suceed, poo yir foreskin ower yir heid”...
I’ll get me coat.....:p

Seems there is a solution to the sale of the car.
I'm buying it for the missus:D

I've agreed to pay what the dealer charged my Dad and everyone is happy. We'll wait until the end of the month when the insurance expires on her Ford Focus, then tax and insure the Kia.

I have to say the Focus has been a brilliant workhorse. I bought it two years before retiring and it got me and my tools to work until the missus took over ownership in 2014. All its needed is a new clutch assembly and a fuel pump in 6 years apart from tyres. All for princely sum of £750.

Really pleased it all worked out well for you Roger. That sounds like an excellent solution all round and definitely makes the best of a bad situation.

^Thanks Alistair.
Guess what, had an inquiry today and he seemed very keen.
I should have removed the ad yesterday but forgot.
Insurance quotes are coming the same as the Focus (older car with bigger engine but low value V newer car, smaller engine, higher value.) Wife is happy to pay £170 with Privilege for protected NCB and fully comp. I don't think she wants to wait until the end of the month.
