Hello

Some advice please. I have just sealed a deal on selling my 05 Passat. The guy sounds very genuine and is coming down this evening with £10200 in cash. Sould I be wary of so much cash is there anything special I need to do with it (Don't say spend it either;) )

You should borrow my note checker (ultra violet), do a web search, dogy £50/20 notes.

It does not take up much room, you can get £6k in 20's in a VCR cassette box.

Don't call me suspicious/paranoid, but why don't you get him to bring the cash during the day so you can get it to the bank before closing so he knows you won't have £10K cash lying around your house overnight.

wrt selling your Passat to buy a Merc

There are some on this forum who will say you've made a great decision

AND

there are others who would say you have made a terrible mistake

they all know themselves... :)

I say: choose carefully, read up on the incredible wealth of info on this forum and enjoy whatever car you buy.

If you'd said Concho I may have done you a straight swap.

btw, I did some work for the Bank of Enlgand a while ago and spent a bit of time at their printing works (crates with millions of pounds worth of bank notes just left in walkways.......enough to make you cry), they said a very good way to spot fakes is to run your finger of the writing that says "Bank of England" at the top of the notes. If it is real you should be able to feel teh writing as it is slightly raised. Apparantly forgers have never managed to do this. Still, could take you a while with all that wedge

They have a little museum there (strange as it is not open to the public) that includes some dodgy notes and they are very difficult to spot.

One last thing, get him to sign a document saying he gave you the money and bought the car "as seen". This gives you some cover if the engine falls out when he's 100 yards down the road (or if he says it has and comes back looking for his money).

I doubt there is anything dodgy going on, but I would have done the "going to the bank" thing too.

The going to the bank thing is a great idea.

I did that when buying a classic car privately. Went to bank with seller, they lodged the cash, so it was all counted & verified by the bank.

Both parties happy, and probably faster than counting all that cash !

Ditto - Cash is just too dangerous IMO. Buy a car with counterfit money and break it. Nice little laundering process (and probably get more than the original cost back too!).
He may be legit, but why take the chance?
At the very least, pop into your local friendly garage/off licence and ask them to check a few random notes.

Now that is a fantastic idea! I will go to my local petrol station and take a few random notes in there and get them to have a look while he is there.

Nice one

Living where I do, this sounds scarey to me. In many cases laundered money is traceable and organizatons such as interpol are involved. Check this one out very carefully:rolleyes:

All went very well actually. He was a genuine honest bloke, checked a few random notes with the feel test as suggested :D and they were fine. I didnt check them at the garage as I forgot! Anyway went to the bank in the morning and they weighed the notes and all was well, the money is now in the bank. I am now without a car although I do have my wifes W202 for now. But I have been looking at Audi A6 as an option. There is one locally up for sale its a 2.4 se quattro w reg 48,000 miles at £6395. I have phoned him and he says it has never had a cam belt change so I am not sure. Its got evry extra though, but fuel economy is 25mpg .................. what do ya think?;)

cam belt is at 60,000 miles Concho so I wouldn't worry. I will warn you though, a cam belt chage is quite expensive (about £700) because they have to take the front of the car to pieces to get to it. If you wand an opinion on the Audi PM me because I had one for 5 years. Fantastic car.

The Audi A6 is has volkswagan passat engine and transmission and basically is a passat with a different badge. The timing belt can break as low as 25k and the transmissions are a joke (the Skoda syndrome). After owning a Benz, why on earth would you buy a (replica) volkswagen?

your right

Yes you are right it is about time I actually went and bought a car. Here is the thing. My heart is saying a Mercedes E class (one I have my eye on) E240 v6 etc or Audi A6 2.4 se (also have my eye on one of those) but my brain is saying Mazda 6 diesel economy etc etc... The opinion of my pocket is of no importance as my brain overrides this every time ;) The pocket got a say on the last car (vw passat diesel) and I was very board indeed for about;) a year.

I would buy the Merc. I had an A6 Diesel Avant great fuel economy and power and it was great but its not as good at the Merc even the C220 we have now which is more an A4 than 6 size. You just dont get the same "feel" nor the have view at the end of the bonnet of the silver arrows looking back at you..
