Standard fare really. These types of email are on the rise, just replace car tax with TV licence, Prime subscription, Sky fee etc. Similar scams come via text message too.

I've had phone calls saying "This is your internet provider....We are about to disconnect your internet account for illegal activity. Press -1 for Customer Service. They tried for about 10-12 days! I just hang up.

I had a text last week about a car tax refund I was owed. I had to think a minute with 3 different vehicles at the house before realising I wasn't due anything from tax office. Thing was the text and the website looked so legit it would be easy to be sucked in except from the part where they ask for your card details to refund the amount to your bank. I can see people getting caught by this one expecting a road tax refund.

They are easy enough to spot but they do catch a lot of unsuspecting people out. There are always "new" people using the internet / email for the first time and those are the ones that are most vulnerable hence why they keep up the barrage of emails. The worst scams at the moment are all the new websites that are appearing offering PPE stuff. I didn't think it was possible to sink that low..

These scams never address you by name, if you SORN a vehicle they send you a cheque.
TV licence is another favourite.
I find the spam filter very good on Gmail, much better than my old BT account.

Never reply to scam emails. By replying you are confirming a "live" email address that can be sold on to other scammers thus you will get more mails.

I've always thought that if everyone replied it would swamp them.
Likewise filling in false information on their phishing sites would make life difficult for them.

I sometimes reply with this:

"You have emailed an email address monitored by the FBI as part of a joint FBI/Interpol investigation into internet fraud.

We will be in touch shortly."

Usually stops it for a while ;)
Did have one scammer come back saying "Don't tell lies you are no such thing!" Which made me laugh, especially as I sent the same reply again....

If you want to have fun with scammers then spend some time on www.419eater.com - the site dedicated to scamming the scammers. It's good fun if you have the time for scambaiting. I used to do it quite a few years back with my IT mates.

Used to get the odd telesales when I had a Police issue mobile phone. After telling them is was a Police mobile, response was either silence, or rang off. Never a second call.
