Hi. Went to start the car (c250cdi-2011) and when turning the key I get no dash lights. The radio etc still works but nothing else. Tried to jump the car with battery cables and still no luck. Was fine yesterday and never had issues before. Is this likely to be the battery just packed in or something else? Normally jumping a dead battery works fine. Steering wheel is locked and can’t unlock either so can’t even get it off the drive !

Hello and welcome

Sounds like the EIS (ignition switch) isn’t acknowledging the key and releasing the steering (as well as allowing start)
Do you have another key you can try?

Might sound silly, but if you have a hairdryer use it to warm up the ignition switch. This worked once for me when our switch failed. We also had Johnnysbc on here repair the switch for us :)

Try banging the bottom of the column or wheel whilst inserting the key, can sometimes losten it off. Sounds like the electronic steering locking is failing though

Spot on. Gave the steering wheel a good left to right and it sort of unlocked or whatever and starts fine now
Cheers all

It will most likely be on its way out so get it fixed whilst it’s still working as you can be in a world of pain when it stops completely

Yes +1 it's only a temporary fix and will leave you stranded again, unless the steering had some unusual force on it, like tyres against a kerb or something.
