Im trying to see if my 1991 190E has a Catalytic Converter.

I looked under the car and From the Engine their is one Box in the middle of the car then around about the rear wheel their is another box and then the back their is a 3rd box.

I know the 2 at the Back of the car are silencers but is the one at the middle also a silencer?

thanks

will check in the morning... looks like it could be, but mines black and looks a little longer... Must be a Cat on mine as you can buy a front pipe section with or without a Cat.

They do - my 190e 2.6 made in 1990 did have one. I asked the MB bloke how to identify if it had one or not, and basically he said that if it had a lambda sensor (or oxygen sensor as it's sometimes called - it's screwed into the exhaust, just after the downpipes, but before the cat and has a lead/leads coming from it), then it's got a cat.

Fortunately, being pre August 1992, your car doesn't need one to comply with emmisions regulations, so if you need to replace it, it's a sight cheaper to get one without a cat (genuine MB downpipes were about £250 for mine w/o Cat, or £950ish with!!!).

As you know, in the end, I got a full stainless system made, as it was only £100 dearer than the downpipes/cat section :D

Cheers, Martin

I can get it from Euro Car Parts, £30 Without Cat or £250 with Cat ;).... Think I know which option I will be going for if the front section needs replacing :D ;) hehe

I think even from ECP the downpipes for mine were about £200+vat w/o Cat!! Such is the expense of the 6 cylinder engine.

I'm making my own system for the V8 though, so that will be fun.........!

Wish I had a set of hydrohlic Ramps in my garage so I could lift the car up into the air, would much better than using a jack and some axel stands :D hehe... If I had the car right up in the air so I could stand under it, I would probably have a go at making my own system as well as it doesnt realy look that hard if you have all the right stuff :)

If you look on the fuel timing setting knob / switch near the passenger front wheel arch and it has the words "KAT" on it then you have a catalytic convertor on your car.
