Thanks for all the advice I got here with regard to replacing the cat on our 1994 E220 Coupe.
We ended up buying one online from these guys - http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/, who were the cheapest of several website selling identical parts. Got the cat for £161 + VAT, which compares favourably with the £801 + VAT from the local Mercedes dealer. Got the guys at the tyre and exhaust depot up the road to fit it for £40, and the cars back to running great. Old decomposing cat must have really been blocking up the pipe.

It probably won't last as long as the OEM part, and the noise on hard acceleration is a little raspy, but all in all a good deal.

The one for a c-180 is only £112 + vat !
The problem with cheap cats is as you say rasping under load.
What I did was gut the old OE one on my car and at MOT time fit
a cheap cat to pass the emissions test then put the OE one back on.
The lambda probe is in the downpipe so the car runs fine,in fact it feels slightly more powerful with the free-flow setup.

I agree with you. Despite what all the big manufacturers say the cat does unreasonably restrict the performance to the detrement on fuel consumption. By only putting them on for the MOT means that it is much less of a lottery as to whether they have failed in between times. Watch out for some of the road side checks though!!

The manufacturers should build engines that are clean and efficient without cats. People like VM can meet the latest #IV emmissions tests without a cat.
