whats an egxorst system.
Not every member has English as first language and nor are they all based in the UK… it’s also really easy to mistype (I know I do it often enough)

Maybe one of the cats were removed by a PO as it was faulty. Is there any signs of being abused down there.

Good luck and keep us posted. Indeed we all have typo days especially with sausage fingers and typing on smart phonez.

I found this confusing as I thought I only had 1 so I looked it up here for confirmation https://mercedes.7zap.com/en/eu/fg/.../49/0/218/0/0/?param=vin:wdd2040022a924672#40

I think the confusion is yet another example of definitions 'Lost in translation' again, from Mercedes original German, Items 20, 40 and 10 (DPF) in the graphic are described collectively as "Catalytic Converter System" which I suspect is why I have also seen references to the DPF, Item 10, being identified as the 2nd CAT?
I don't know what is inside the Catalyst, Items 20/40 but if you are referring to the DPF as the 2nd Cat, then, this shouldn't be empty.

This is of course MY C 220 CDi exhaust system NOT yours! so I have made assumptions that you may possibly have the same or similar, visit the website posted above and confirm what you actually have!

I guess you mean CO rather than CO2? There's nothing in the exhaust to reduce CO2, but a diesel oxidation catalyst does convert CO into CO2.

Very unlikely to be a DPF on Euro 3/4 car....

Mot doesn't care for anything but smoke and I expect the Spanish Itv is the same. I notice OPs other posts talk of exceeding the plate value of 0.8, that must be smoke?

the Cats won’t make any difference to smoke, you have another issue, what is the colour of the smoke, grey or black?

Black would be incomplete combustion, so have a look at boost leaks as a start, from there you going to have to go through the system bit by bit to find where the issue lies, worth doing the glow plugs too, as they are in use all the time to lower emissions (in turn less smoke).
