Yes correct, good for up to a mile in open spaces.
A few years back I had a mag mount 3DB gain whip on the roof. Working to another with the same antenna, it was good for 5 miles.

Yes, I believe 0.5 watt is the current legal output of PMRs, but there is one on sale that does 4 watts (if you want to be naughty)

Check this out..

I used to listen to top band, and 80 metres about a hundred years ago(or so it seems).
I think the amateur radio scene died when people stopped building their own gear, and started using the Crystal Palace repeater.
That was some mindless drivel!

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
Main use for me was when I lived at West Kingsdown and marshaling Brands Hatch events.

Being so high up in WK had advantages when skipping on my heavily modified old Yasu
I modified and built my PSU's and Amps when I was an aspiring electronics nut.

No internet or mobile phones to play with

Different times and different people back then .............

Very small size and the battery lasts very well too.

If you buy any, buy the programming cable £5. From experience trying to programme off the keypad is a nightmare.

For the amateurs amongst us I still have my Standard C528, from 20 years ago in police comms. I hate to think how much they cost then. I also have a couple of Motorola GP900's programmed to PMR channels. Good radios but a bit heavy.

Agreed the cable is definitely necessary.

They do one with digital Comms too.

When the police went to Airwave radios they went digital. There were a couple of back to back channels in the radios, but the range was never as good as the old UHF FM back to back channels. Frequency's were only about 20MHZ apart, RF output was the same. Caught us out the first time we used them on a job.

Nuff said LostKiwi. ;) After I got rid of all my CB stuff (which must have been in the early 90's), the radio itch still hadn't left me entirely. So I eventually ended up getting a Realistic scanner (the Pro 2006 400) with access to loads of stuff at the time, but the things I used to listen to most were the Ham 2 metre and 70 cm bands (I might have had delusions about getting licenced back then).

So I think I might just be investing in one of those little Baofeng radios, for receive purposes only of course.
