CD changer not recognised on CLK

Hi I have just bought a 2001 CLK200K. It has a M-B 6CD changer in the boot. The first time I used this it worked, but while driving to Sainsburys it stopped. Ever since then the stereo in the car does not recognise that the CD changer is connected and just says "no CD" and "no CC".
There must still be power to the CD changer as it lights up and the eject button still works.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom, your units are coupled up with fiber optics, maybe a broken or damaged cable, you could pull the main fuse and see if recognises it again

Tom,

Either the wakeup signal in which runs from the rear of the headunit to the Cd changer has come adrift or become damaged or as Malcolm suggests the fibre cable is faulty or loose.

The most likely cause is the fibre cable has popped out of the Cd changer. you can easily check this by carefully pulling back the boot carpet next to the changer and undoing the two screws which hold the changer bracket in. Carefully lift up the whole assembly taking car as the fibre cables are delicate. Make sure the orage fibre cable is securely in place and also the three pin copper connector.

If that doesnt fix it then you need to pull the head unit out and check the other end of the fibre loop. If you have a factory phone kit, then the fibre will run to that also so it may be that it has come adrift there instead.

I wouldnt pull the fuse if i were you unless you are sure you have the code for the head unit!

Hi Alfie

How are you?

If you have a factory phone kit, then the fibre will run to that also so it may be that it has come adrift there instead.

I can't remember if you'd checked this on mine? It does have a holder for the phone but says "no phone".

No, we didnt check this. The phone controller is also D2B in your car and will be part of the fibre loop. Cant recall immediately where the phone controller is in the W208 but it might be either under one of the seats or in the boot behind some trim!

If you find it, then check that the fibre hasnt come out of the controller.

Oooh. Ok. So if it falls out of the back of the headunit (checked), the autochanger (checked) and the phone controller (not checked) then we will experience this problem? (That might explain why you commented that my car didn't have a phone installed.)

PS what does it look like?

The phone controller is in the boot on the left between the inner and outer wing. If the cable has come adrift from the phone controller then no d2B devices will work as the loop is not intact.

Thanks. :)

Idiot question: how do you remove the trim with the intent of being able to put it back neatly?

Managed it! The fibre optic cable was in but need to test it with a torch or something. Also wondering about taking out the unit and checking the power is in. What do you lot think?

Well I tried unplugging and replugging the fibre optic cable, power cable for the cd changer. Also I tried taking the fuse out for the radio. None of which worked which leaves me thinking that maybe the cd changer is just broken?!

One tip,if you look at the end of a fiber optic cable you will see the light in the end of the sending one and the light in the sending socket.

So a cable plugged into the sending socket will hav the light in the other end of that cable

Before coming to this conclusion, see if you can get hold of a working autochanger and swap them over... chances are (like me) it will be working fine. I suspect my cable.
