Hi Guys, I have just returned from Ireland with my 2001 CDI 220 and during my stay the auto box shut down to first gear only. The Merc dealer over there said that the Transmission fluid should have been changed at 50k (current miles are 90+k) and that was the problem. I have looked in the service book and cannot find when this is checked. Can anyone tell me what Mercedes recommends on this one- is it mileage or time and if so what is it?

Thanks for your help, fireman-frank

Mercedes said that these were filled for life and never needed changing. Over the last few years they have recommended changing the fluid at 50/60K (can't remember which). A change at a MB dealer will be about £150.

The dealer in Aberdeen still insists that it isn't required and that it is sealed for life.

Some do need changing and some dont, its done on transmission number break off point, a dealer service sheet show the numbers for each model.

Drain the oil, look at it, then you will realise that the sealed for life theory was a big MB mistake to stipulate. Put your car into an MB dealer now and they will recommend a change at 60K.

Done mine at 56K miles, and it was chocolate brown, lost all it's properties and was screaming, please change me. Auto gear change is much smoother also. Use only MB spec oil. Drop the sump and do the filter, gasket and sump bolts aswell. You will need a dipstick to check the level, engine running and hot. You will notice the difference and it will give you peace of mind.

MB ATF will cost approx £9 per litre and you will need at least 7 x 1 litre bottles to do the job.
