I recently had an auto transmission problem in Ireland when the Box stayed in 1st gear only. The mechanic came out and said that the box was in Emergency mode due to a gearbox problem.

On stripping down the box the garage indicated that the gearbox transmission fluid was dirty and should have been changed earlier by my service agent (a properly acredited MB dealer).
On my return to England I wrote to my garage and they said that they are not recommended to change the oil unless the customer reports a problem!!!

Surely if I report a problem it is then possibly too late for remedial work. Am I missing something here or ar MB not taking responsibility for their recommendations. Do you think that the recommendations are reasonable?

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
During 1998 MB took away the dip stick and said they are filled for life, two years back MB have been forced to back track on this, and now they say change along with the filter at 60k miles and this is what we are all doing

CLK Emergency transmission

Hi,

My CLK 430 Auto has just locked into 2nd gear (EM TRANSMISSION) anyone know where the auto-transmission fluid levels can be found on the V8 engine.

I found what looks like the reservior on the front right hand side (when facing car) but there are no markings on it! Also I have removed the cap and the level is not touching the small dip stick which is enclosed!

Also what grade of fluid should be use DOT etc.... and does anyone know how to do the EM Transmission reset.

Regards

tina

There is no "re-set" that you can do.

The level is checked with a workshop dipstick. There is not a resevoir under the bonnet.

Mb fluid only should be used.

I recomend the fault codes are read first.
