Hey everyone, i searched through existing posts on central locking but couldn't find an answer to my problem:

I have a 1990 w124 E230ce and the central locking has just failed, i.e stopped working completely.

Last week it worked fine, locked and unlocked all doors from both drivers and passengers door, then it stopped working on the drivers door followed by the passenger door a week later -

i suspect its the vacuum pump, but had a couple more queries: i replaced the battery last week, could this be the cause of the problem, did this blow something?

The fuse is intact, does the central locking operate via a relay too? i cannot see that it does on the haynes manual wiring diagram.

obviously the sensible thing would be to take out the motor and connect to 12v and check if it operates, but any other suggestions would be appreciated, know there have been 100's of threads on this subject, so apologise for bringing it up again

regards

snowdmc

p.s. forgot to mention this is all using the key in the door as it has no fob and i cannot hear the motor at all, so suspect it is either dead or getting no feed

Loose Connection Or Dirty Contacts

Last week it worked fine, locked and unlocked all doors from both drivers and passengers door, then it stopped working on the drivers door followed by the passenger door a week later -

When you turn the key I am assuming that you are not hearing the pump function at this point. It is possible that you may have a loose connection or dirty contacts at the pump since the fuse is not blown.

A loose connection could cause an interruption of the cycle thus half of the items to stop working.

Check your pump and get it going again and take it from their.

Try dis-connecting the PSE pump for ten mins and then re-connect it. If the CL starts to work the PSE is faulty. This is a great and easy way to diagnose these pumps.

thanks for the advice guys will take a look in to those matters you've raised, suspect the pump is knackered anyway, but guess i need to make sure.

Does anyone know if the pump on the E230 is the same as the one from a 190? They look the same shape and there's one finishing on ebay today.

When my W124 250d locks started playing up the fault was found to be a failed door actuator, its diaphagm had torn slightly and leaked only while the rod that pokes out of it was in motion.

With your car, I presume a 124 coupe,if locking the boot also locks the doors, then this shows that the vacuum system is working and that the fault must be on the front doors where the electrical switch is not making contact to operate the vacuum pump. the remote sensors are also inside the door handles

Hi again Malcom, Ok i agree with you so far. How do i find these electrical switches, and what do i need to do? I prev tried to look into this and took off the door panel and removed the electrical plug that plugs into the door lock (like a circular plastic plug with 3 pins in it) all looked clean and even sprayed some wd40 on it and put all back together and still no differance. Or do you mean another switch?/ Please help

Hi there, Television,

I see you were online today, i was just wondering if you had time to explain to me about the switches on the locks of my W124 e320 coupe 1993 model. The 2 remotes lights come on when i press the remote buttons but nothing happens. Also just to make it clear my car does not have the lights on the door handles that light when you lock and unlock the car. Mine is the older type. Hope you can help as i really want to be able to use the remote fobs, instead of always needing to get into the car via the boot lock.

regards Mark.

Mark it would not be a bad idea foir us to have the next 3 numbers after 124 on the VIN.

The drivers door will have to be dismantled to get to switch 105 in the link, for that is the switch that lock the car

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=717.450&CT=F&cat=15T&SID=72&SGR=030&SGN=02

One can try and deal with the remote later, without switch 105 working via the key, one must start there[/QUOT

Hi Again Malcomb,
Thanks for that diagram i see the part you are on about. But can you confirm exactly where it is, as on the diagram it looks like it might be part of the components of the outside door handle parts. I still understand that i will have to dismantle part of the door. But how much of the door will i need to dismantle, as prev i thought about taking the locking mechanism out from inside the door and it looked far to complicated so i left well alone.

Do i need to take all that out to get to switch 105 or do i just take door handle off. Sorry if its a bit long winded, but dont want to get it apart and cant fit back together again. lol

thanks Mark.
