Especialy when you get out with the engine running, on a wet evening of horizontal rain to check the sidelights are working, the door blows shut to the first latch and the damn central locking kicks in after a few seconds......Result.... Car running, half unlocked/locked door, and me getting wet.

Moral of the tale... Take the bl**dy keys with you when you get out next time.

Thank heaven for the "Skills" I developed years ago opening car doors with a coat hanger ;)

Hopily Xmas every1

Wow , thats worrying, I must have done that sort of thing loads of times. I allways thought that the central locking came on at a certain speed and not after x amount of time:shock:.

Yes, moral is always switch engine off and take key when you get out of car, even if it is only for a couple of seconds.

Just looked this up in the user manual.

Seems that this function was changed >2000 as the car only self locks when it reaches 10mph. I thought this was the case which is why I checked, so the above only relates to <1999 on an e class

Why does this happen? It doesn't happen if you open the door and then close it. It must be a fault, surely? And it didn't happen on my 1998 E class.

That sounds better and I did lock myself out of my 140 and had to buy another key.

I think it is all to do with the old style comfort thing in the boot, the newer logic systems do only lock once the car is moving,,, but odd things happen.

Driving through Germany Lilian kept opening her door and I could not close it till under 10mph

Many
Some years ago I had a 1998 210 300 turbo diesel. Two of my then young children were playing around the car and in the car whilst I was visiting somebody.
They managed, somehow or other, to lock the car with the key in the ignition. Local Mercedes dealer said that was impossible!!! - just a 50 mile round drive to pick up the spare key!!

Happy Christmas to all
Regards

Bill

Which has nothing to do with the OP's problem..

I can't see any logic in MB designing a system the auto-locks the car, when stationary and engine running..

There must be a fault if what the OP describes is correct..

Why not? The fact you know that fact is indicative of someone defensive and insecure.

Chill out Malc!

Could it be that the switch in the cab was pushed, this could over ride any automatic feature. The other thing is the PSE pump in the boot is susceptible to damp, this could cause it. The other thing is our cars are renown for one offs, never to be repeated or happen again.
